| I've found that most women enjoy it when you take notice of the
efforts that they make with their appearence. Compliments
regarding things that they have no control over (their natual
endowments) meet with much more mixed response. I have one very
dear friend who seems rather pleased by acknowledgement of the
fact that she has really great legs. (You know who you are.) As
a rule, however, I restrict compliments made to coworkers to
choice of clothing or hair-style or the like.
The only other recommendation I have is that compliments should
always be genuine. When someone is wearing something that you
really like or which looks especially good on them, you
compliment is likely to be well received as there's a good
chance you are acknowledging real effort on their part. If on
the other hand you compliment at random, just to be friendly or
to have something to say, you run the risk of complimenting them
on what they regard as a fiasco.

281.2 | SMILE when you say that.. | NWD002::SAMMSRO | Robin Samms | Tue Apr 14 1987 01:41 | 10 |
| I've always found that two basic rules govern compliments,and
that when I follow them ,the results are most often pleasing
to the complimentor,and complimentee.
Be sincere,and compliment the action ,not the attribute unless,of
course you know the person well enough as in the example in .1 .
Smile when you say it,always.

| Compliments are nice coming from coworkers (ie people I know).
JimB hit the nail on the head. I'd rather be complimented for my
wonderful fashion taste ;-) than for my baby blue eyes. I didn't
have to do anything for the eyes, didn't have to make an effort.
If you like my eyes, call my parents. They did all the "work" :-).
.0 (sorry, didn't write down your name) : if people are already
complimenting you they probably wouldn't be threatened if you returned
in kind. Nice syntax, btw.

281.4 | Makes my day! | ODIXIE::JINES | | Mon Apr 20 1987 13:15 | 4 |
| I have to agree with the other respones. Nothing makes my day better
than when someone complinments me on my dress as long as it's done
in a sincere manner. On the other hand nothing makes me more mad
than when a derogatory remark is made.

| If you are sincere in your compliment and the other person is offended,
the problem lies with the other person. I enjoy complimenting people
about the way they dress, their eyes, their hair.
I wish someone would pay me a compliment once in a while. Maybe
I should change. Hmmm...
I had a woman tell me that I have beautiful eyes. I was very
flattered. Nobody ever told me that before.
My father once told me that flattery will get you nowhere, but it
helps.
Specne <--- this is my new name, I'm tired of correcting it.

281.7 | today | STUBBI::B_REINKE | the fire and the rose are one | Thu Apr 23 1987 00:01 | 12 |
| Today I met a fellow noter for the first time - I had meant to
bring him flowers from my garden but left without picking them,
after checking out the roadsides enroute - a few pussy willows,
some forsythia in private gardens and a lot of maple in bloom -
- I drew a picture of some daffodils for him - he brough me flowers
and I gave him the picture - we both very much liked what we were
given.... a gift from the heart is never wrong, and if the recipiant
or the observer has a problem that is *their* problem. I think that
it is in pretty poor taste to criticise a person who gives a compliment
in good faith.

| Well, Spence, I haven't met you yet (though I hope to someday),
so I can't comment on your eyes.
However, you do write some of the nicest notes I've ever seen.

p.s. And if you wear that kilt you mentioned, I bet you have great
legs, too....

I think you had better stick with his eyes. I guess it depends
on how long the kilt is!
Sorry Spence, I couldn't resist....

281.12 | What the heck was the topic anyway? | GENRAL::FRASHER | Undercover mountain man | Sat Apr 25 1987 01:23 | 15 |
| Well, there're only 2 people in DEC who have seen my legs. Bill's
wife is the other one. I was going to comment that my legs are
part of the reason people would laugh, but now I don't have to.
I asked my wife if she thought my eyes were pretty. She said,
"Weeeelllllll, they're not bad!" Can't please 'em all. ;-)
Thanks, Bonnie, I've had a lot (7 or 8) people compliment me on
my writing. I always thought I was boring. You realize that you
are leaving yourselves open for more notes from me. ;-)
Spence
BTW, Bill, how fast can you stop on water skis? ;-)
How long can you tread water?
