| Just read "Brightness Falls from The Sky" by Tiptree.
Excellent.
Why would a woman use a male nom_de_plume ? The SF field
has many fine authors who happen to be female. They don't
seem discriminated against. Kate Wilhelm comes to mind.

Not now, but they used to be. James Tiptree, Jr. has
been writing a LONG time and when she first broke into the field,
it was necessary to use the male name to get published.
I'll have to see if I can dig up the artivle I have of her and her
explanation of the name choice. (No promises. Who knows where
the @#$#% it is?!)

| re .17
Actually Alice Seldon (James Tiptree) is a fairly recent
addition to science fiction (i.e. no more that 10 to 12 years
ago at the most) and she began writing when there were a lot
of well established and well accepted women writers in the
field (like Ursula LeGuinn and Marion Zimmer Bradley). At
the time there was a support group for women writers (mostly
by means of round robin letters if I remember correctly) that
Tiptree/Seldon joined and then was asked to leave because (s)he
wasn't a woman - rather than "blow her cover" she quit.
Tiptree/Seldon (she also writes under the name of Racoona Seldon
worked for many years in the intelligence field. She chose the
pen name largely out of a desire to keep her personal and public
personnas separate and because she enjoyed the challenge of
creating a separate identity.
She was finally "discovered" because the biolographical data
she gave as Tiptree gave her away. She had lead such a unique
life that someone was able to make the connection between
James Tiptree and Alice Seldon.
It is quite interesting that as James Tiptree she has both
been praised for "his" unique ability to portray women, and
been accused of being a sexist male who had no understanding
of what it means to be a woman.
Two of the earliest short stories of hers that I remember are
"Your Haploid Heart" and "The Women Nobody Sees".

Not very helpful, but I'm almost sure the article you're thinking
about is in an issue of IASFM. I know that they ran a rather lengthy
article about her once.

| Did you know that James Tiptree also used to give speaches at SF
conventions and would act/dress/pretend to be a man? She apparently
was able to pull it off.
One of the major reasons she used an assumed name was because her
mother disapproved of SF. She was afraid that if she used a female
name and appeared in public her mother would recognize her.

But I could also see that she could also disguise herself
to look like a man.

Actually :-), this marks her 20th year writing as Tiptree.
She first wrote under that name in 1967. As for women being well
established in SF at that time, whether or not it was true, she
apparently did not think so, for in her own words the reason she
took a male name to write under was: "A male name seemed like good
camouflage. I had the feeling that a man would slip by less observed.
*I've had too many experiences in my life being the first woman
in some damned occupation.; even when I wasn't the first woman,
I was part of a group of first women.*" (emphasis mine.) "I saw
the name on some jam pot. Ting was with me; I said, "James Tiptree"
and he says "Junior!" It was done without consious thought; but
I suppose I couldn't have avoided having the thought - although
I don't remember it - that *the editor would take my stories more
seriously*."
Interestingly enough, she apparently has had suicide in mind
as an option for quite a while. In this 1983 article she says, "...I
wrote "Slow Music," which reads like a funeral march, a goodbye.
And I meant it that way. I thought I was through, and, typically,
I was going to kill myself...."
This article also mentions that she had recently had open heart
surgery, so it would appear that her health, as well as her husband's
was a factor.
