255.0. "Advertising standards problem" by GOOGLY::KERRELL (clockwork noter) Fri Mar 27 1987 09:36

The following ad was placed in a conference I moderate:-

                               *** FOR SALE ***

                               VW POLO L, 1980

Burgundy, four very good tyres, recent engine tune, lady
owner, reliable car, long MOT, 1300.

Is it sexist, if so what should I do as a moderator?

Alot of people ask now when they buy a car if the owner was male
of female because they consider a female to drive harder on a car
    than a man driver.

Also they tend to take a little better TLC in some (not all cases)
    to their car.

Not sexist just conclusionary on the part of the purchaser.

255.2Opposite meaning?EDSVAX::PONDFri Mar 27 1987 10:3412
RE: .1 - I think the writer of the add has the opposite in mind.
The writer seems to be under the impression that women take better
care of their cars or perhaps drive less recklessly than men. Hence,
a car owned by a "lady" presents some benefits. Otherwise, why would
the writer mention it when trying to sell the car?

As to the nature of the add - whatever the present owner considers
a positive feature of the car should be listed in the add. Clearly,
"lady owner" conveys an ambigious message. Let the seller live
    with that.

I forgot what conference I was in and assumed that all of the replies
had gotten wiped out. Awesome. Strange is facter than fiction. %-)

I'll repeat what I said over there, its such a minor point, I think
    it doesn't matter.
