192.0. "socially-conscious buyers' guide" by ULTRA::GUGEL (Simplicity is Elegance) Fri Feb 06 1987 17:06

I think this is appropriate in this notes file. I've read about
this book a couple of different places now and I'm planning on
getting a copy whenever I can. Should have some interesting findings.

It's called *Rating America's Corporate Conscience* by Alice Tepper
Marlin. She is the president of the Council on Economic Priorities,
a public-research group that looks at businesses and their social
    policies.

This book covers 130 major American companies and their products,
which ordinary consumers are likely to buy and use daily such as
detergents, food, paper products, etc. It also gives each company
a "socially conscience report card". It tells which companies that:

    	do business in South Africa
    	make weapons
have a good track record of hiring minorities and women
    	are environmentally okay
push cigarettes or other harmful products
have liberal parental leave policies or good day-care programs
have a good track record of charitable contributions

This book isn't meant to persuade you not to buy a product you already
use and like. It's sort of a tie-breaking guide. If you're like
me and don't care which toilet paper you buy, this book might show
you which toilet paper company you'd rather buy from (the one that has
    a female CEO, right? :-) ).

    re: .0 [ tongue in cheek ]
Does this suggest you favor British and Isreali goods over US or
France ? (Maggie and Golda Mier over Reagan or Miterand !).

I'm interested in where the book can be bought, as (if not already)
it might be of interest to some people I know (they are GREATLY
    concerned over this topic).
