186.0. "The Keys to Career Transition" by REGENT::BROOMHEAD (Don't panic -- yet.) Tue Feb 03 1987 14:59

This is the description of a course to be given at the
    Unicorn Bookstore on Monday evenings.

    		"The Keys to Career Transition

"There is a systematic approach to career transition which
begins within you. This course teaches life-long assessment
skills which expand your options, and which you apply to help
determine what you want to do with your life. The topics include
discovering your skills and how to market them, how to match
your values to an organization's goals, and how financial needs
    translate into realistic salary requirements.

"This course will be taught by Debra Spencer, an integrator
with a successful career in both technology and personal counseling.
    She has maintained two consulting businesses for many years;
one involving computers and the other in awareness breakthrough
counseling. She has built recording studios, produced films
and technical manuals, and worked in art galleries."

Mondays, starting March 23, 1987 and
    			 ending May 4, 1987
    		7:30 - 9:30
    		Tuition $75 - $115, on a sliding scale

    		Unicorn Books
    		1210 Massachusetts Ave.
    		Arlington, Mass. 02174
    		617-646-3680

I have know Debra for many years, since she did contract work
for my then-husband's group in Parker Street. She is intelligent,
warm and caring, and has really done all those different things.
This should be a really good course; I know that her counseling
has been useful, helpful, and comforting to several of our friends.

Two questions:

What is "awareness breakthrough counseling" and

What training has Debra Spencer received in counseling?

Debra has dictated the following to me:

"Awareness breakthrough counseling deals with the specific issue
or area where you are stuck. It is usually used in conjunction
with other therapies. I can help you be aware (or more aware) of
alternatives you may not be seeing, which provides a better data
base from which to make decisions.

"I have over five years of counseling training, primarily Jungian,
although one of my counseling trainers was primary Freudian. In
the non-traditional realms, I have studied with a variety of
Eastern practioners and Western shamans. My practice is primarily
    heart-centered.

"The courses I am teaching this spring deal with various areas
of vocational guidance. I also do one-on-one vocational counseling.
I have a sliding fee scale.

"I am not currently taking on any more clients who need crisis
intervention counseling or long-term therapy. I can, however,
    provide referrals."

Some people succeed at nearly everything they try. These tru
achievers have learned special skills. These skills produce
a balance of mental, emotional, and spiritual self-awareness,
qualities which are the necessary ingredients for personal
    success.

THE KEYS TO CAREER TRANSITION helps you to discover, apply, and
market your skills, increase awareness of personal values, and
financial self-worth, and helps you chart a course for what you
want to do with your life... and thus, your career.

    You need this course if:

    * You're unhappy in your present job, but can't put your finger
       on WHY.

    * You want another type of job, but don't think you have the
skills to qualify, and don't know how to "get there from here".

    * You've made critical decisions by guessing at random, and by
crossing your fingers, but now you would like to learn a better
       stategy.

    * Any chapter of your life reads like a mystery story; you can't
figure out why things happened the way they did. You're
confused about why things sometimes go well and sometimes go
very badly, despite what you do or don't do.

    * You've found yourself at dead ends from which you could only
       escape by making abrupt jumps.

    * You're an enigma to yourself.

The seven-week course will be taught by Debra Spencer, an integrator
who has held two careers simultaneously for many years, one in
counseling, and one in computers. The course is held at
