122.0. "Better ideas for Chanukah/Christmas gifts" by DINER::SHUBIN (Go ahead - make my lunch!) Thu Dec 04 1986 18:52
Instead of buying everyone Chanukah/Christmas gifts that they don't want,
make a donation to a worthy cause. Here are some suggestions in Boston. I
don't have the addresses, but they're in the phone book:
o Rosie's Place -- a shelter for homeless women,
o Pine Street Inn -- a shelter for homeless men and women,
o Casa Myrna Velasquez -- a shelter for battered women (I may have
the name wrong, but it's close).
o AIDS Action Committee -- research and care group for AIDS victims.
I know that AAC will send a card to someone if you make a donation in their
name, the others might if you ask. Most of the larger charities (e.g.,
Multiple Sclerosis Society, Cancer Society) do it as well.
Someone in our group contacted the Salvation Army, and has "adopted" 2
families. She's collecting food and gifts from our colleagues for them.
I don't have much Christmas spirit (being Jewish, I find this season a bit
much to take), but this is what it's supposed to be all about, eh?

(PS: the idea wasn't mine, but I'm passing it on).
