170.0. "Book for learning JavaScript recommendations? " by SCAMP::SMITH (Never say never, I always say.) Wed Apr 02 1997 18:23

I need to buy a book about learning JavaScript
for a beginner/non-programmer. Any recommendations?

Also, what's the current version? I saw one book
with V1.1, but I thought I saw a reference to V2.0.1
somewhere. Maybe I'm confused, though.

Thanks!

Mike

This should point you in the right direction.

You can download Microsoft's "Jscript" reference for free. I don't know how
close that is to "real" JavaScript. www.microsoft.com/jscript

Netscape has just released Visual JavaScript. I'm not sure whether we
have it on the Software Distribution Server yet, but you can look there.

A visual quickstart guide is what I use to get things rolling. It's called,
Javascript for the world wide web. It's an easy way of learning it. Peachpit
press puts it out. Their homepage is:

You can order it through them, or head to a bookstore.

re: .*

I went for the book mentioned in .7, but have checked-out
the Web Sites mentioned in previous Replies. All great
info. Thanks.

I got the book at Softpro, near the Burlington Mall (in
Burlington, MA). This store is worth the trip if you're
not too far away. Gobs of Software titles!

If you're going to visit Softpro at Vinebrook Plaza in Burlington
be sure to go around the corner to check out Barnes & Noble. B&N has
a decent technical books section and discount tables of 20%. I usually
park at Softpro, go to B&N, and then Softpro if I have any money left.

I like Danny Goodman's JavaScript BIBLE. And I've bought half a dozen
JS books. And JS is up to v1.2 I believe.
