30.0. "Delphi 3.0" by MARVIN::GOODWIN (Pete Goodwin) Fri May 02 1997 11:15

    Delphi 3.0 is out!

I received a mail about upgrading my Delphi 2.0 to 3.0 and promptly put
in an order. The package arrived within three days, so now I have
    Delphi 3.0

There are a lot of changes - new components, new features, new style
    help...

VCL components don't have to be in the main VCL package - I added two
to a package of mine own. It rebuilt very quickly and appear no
    different than normal. Nice one!

There appear to be more hints and warnings. I got a lot of 'unused
variable' hints and 'may be uninitialized' warnings.

Otherwise everything works as before. Delphi 3.0 supports creating
ActiveX controls, and has a JPEG library. Debugging is with pop up data
tips - like Visual C++. It also has prompting for function calls and
    statement shortcuts.

Looks like I've got a lot of reading to do... 8)

But the price !!!!!

Previous upgrades have been around the 99.00 mark. This one is 249 - I
know its the second one up but you'd think they would be nice to their long
time customers.

    Re: Upgrade price

I too was shocked by the upgrade price, 250 pounds is way too much and
makes one wonder what the full price will be. I suggest waiting until
it's on the shelves, I've generally found that Delphi is much cheaper
from mail order/retail outlets rather than ordering direct from
Borland. The only downside is that you have to wait a short while until
it's out there but I can live with that. Also from the bumpf I received
I'm still undecided as to whether it'll be worth upgrading,

How much is a full copy of Delphi 2.0 in the UK? In the US, you can
pick up Delphi 2.0 developer for just under $200, and once you've done
that, you can get the upgrade to V3 through Borland free (or at least,
for a $10 handling fee). I think the upgrade offer applies to Delphi
2.0 purchases between April 1 and May 31. I'm assuming the upgrade
promotion is valid worldwide, which may be a rash assumption.
