I have a customer who has 2 Alpha 4000's that they bought in Feb. They now have bought I/O expansions for this boxes. All they received was the I/O backplane and a power supply. Will we be able to do the upgrade from what I've read we may need a new system drawer. Is that true.

617.1 | needs drawer swap | GIDDAY::FLAWN | Thu May 22 1997 05:12 | 13
Note 511 gives some info on this. From this and the parts lists it comes out that the older BA30A drawer can't be upgraded with the expansion option you have (I think you have the pwr sup, a saddle module *and* a horse module, which make up H7150-AA). The H7150-AA can be used for expanding the newer BA30B-AB drawers. In this case a drawer swap would be needed, unless there's another way of achieving the objective (seems surprising that they'd add new stuff so quick as to run out of slots in a couple of months ?). Regards, Dave.

When they bought these systems they were fully populated with KZPSA's and DE500's they are connecting to some EMC controllers so to add anything else like memory channels we need the expansion. With the new BA30B-AB drawer will we just have to move the CPU's memory and I/O cards plus install the PCI expansion or will we have to field strip the existing boxes and move everything over to the new drawers.

The "new" 4000 upgrade box is a BA30B-AA and it includes the PCI expansion already installed. All you need to do is remove CPU/Memory/PCI options from the old drawer, install it in the new drawer and return the old drawer. Orderable part number is DH-53Z2A-AA. Les |
