615.0. "ALPHASERVER 4000 won't power up" by CSCMA::KOTOCH () Wed May 21 1997 12:57

    Hi All,
    I hope someone can help here since Colorado support
    has not been able to, I have an Alphaserver 4000 (DURANGO)
    that is new out of the box, the system has 2 466 mhz cpu's
    and 512mb of EDO ram, 3 fddi cards, video, enet, and kzpsa
    options on the first PCI bus, anytime an option is put into
    the 2nd PCI backplane the system will not power up. I have
    already replace the obvious (2nd PCI mothe board, 2nd IOD
    module, main mother board, PCM, and both power supplies and
    the problem persists. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Artie

615.1"not power up" clarificationPOBOXB::STEINMANWed May 21 1997 13:0310

    Hi Artie,

    When you say the machine will not power up, do you mean that the
    machine powers itself off? Or do you mean that power remains on, but
    the system does not initialize and give a console prompt?

    Thanks

615.2power up clarificationCSCMA::KOTOCHWed May 21 1997 14:156
    Sorry for the confusion, the system starts to power up, the OCP
    comes on for 2 seconds then flickers a few times then out it goes
    thus shutting off the AC. If I remove the options from the 2nd
    PCI bus the system runs just fine.

    Do you have confidence in the wall power? Are there other comparable
    machines hanging off the same power strip?
615.4CSCMA::KOTOCHWed May 21 1997 16:214
    Yes the power on the bus is good cause there are 2 other identical
    systems on the same strip and have pci options on both buses and
    are running just fine.

    	What type and rev are your DEFPAs?

    Plug the system directly into the wall outlet, or use a seperate power
    strip. Three systens on the *same* power strip is probably exceeding
    the power available. I seen the same behavior with Sable systems in
    our lab.

    The system's AC is from an overhead bus bar not a power strip.
    So the overloading is not an issue here, I even had the site
    electrician check the phases on the bus bar for load balancing.

    Hi everyone who responded,
    The system power is fine now, I spoke with one of the design
    engineers (Mark K.) in Maynard, and it turns out that the 3.3v
    power harness for the 2nd pci backplane was not installed. After
    installing it the system powers up ok wit options in both pci
    backplanes and diags/unix run fine. Thanks to all and especiall Mark.
