| I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand what you're asking.
If you're saying you see no LEDs on the PCM, have you tried swapping
this part? Do you see anything on the OCP display? What about on the
CPU module LED?
Are you saying the Service Manual is helpful or is not helpful? If
not helpful, would be good if you could provide feedback on what
needs improvement.

Thanks for your response,
I don't see anything beside the light in the OCP, ( no messages )
The Leds on the pwr module and cpu mod. are OKE!!!!!! thats the funny
part of it.
What about this Service manual, the troubleshooting parts is not
good, its only leds oke or not oke but for example in my case whats now
A nice flow chart with step by step by power on whats happend in the
machine should no be bad, then you get any idea where to look.
The FS- Engineer swap everything in this machine without a solution.

607.3 | We see this often in Mfg | VYGER::HENDERSONL | | Fri May 16 1997 07:06 | 10 |
| From .0 I would read that the problem being experienced is the one
which is the most difficult to diagnose ie
OCP Display lights up but no data is displayed and the system is hung.
These symptoms are caused mostly by B3050, B3040 or 54-23803 faulty or
connector damaged modules but I have seen CPUs cause this symptom as
well.

| Note 38.2 has the latest SROM / XSROM Functional spec. It goes into
great detail about what the power-up steps are.
If no OCP display, have you checked/tried the following:
1. Made sure that the intensity on the display is not all the way
down? Older OCPs have a little knob above the LCD display. The
newer ones have a small hole that can accept a small screwdriver.
2. Checked for a good OCP cable connection?
3. Looked at the PCI Bridge (Horse) module's STP LED? Does it come
on? If the CPU LED is on, one of the next things the SROM goes out
and tests is IOD0 (simple loopback test). No CPU cache or system
memory is involved yet.. Then onto programming the junk I/O
devices on the PCI motherboard (Saddle) such as the EISA bridge,
the COMBO chip, the IIC/OCP logic. Still no cache/memory involved
so these would not be suspected to be faulty..
4. Have you tried connecting a serial line to COM1 to see if you get
any output? [Perhaps the rest of the machine is okay and the OCP
is broken?] If an NT machine, power-up and then wait a minute or
more (even longer if gobs of memory) and then press <CR> on the
serial terminal a few times - console may be set graphics (VGA).
5. If none of the above provides any clues/fixes, then I'd suggest
swapping the OCP.
6. Finally, the OCP hangs off the IIC bus which runs throughout the
system. If a faulty IIC device is taking down the IIC bus, then
this could lead to no OCP display (though I've never seen this)
without some accompanying COM1 printing by power-up code.. IIC
devices live on the following modules: OCP, CPUs, motherboard,
PCI Bridge module (Horse), and PCI motherboard (Saddle).
Let us know what you find..

in this machine?]

Which modules/parts have been swapped already?

607.7 | Fixed Server Control Module | MUCCS1::PIETERSON | Alpha AXP Hardware Support | Tue May 20 1997 12:49 | 23 |

Re -4
To answer your questions:
In the machine is only one CPU
1. The intensity of the OCP - Display was oke
2. Cable oke
3. Leds are oke on all the modules no failure
4. There is non output to a terminal by power on
5. OCP was swapped
6. All modules wer swapped except the Server Control Module
I swapped the Server Control module and this fixed the problem
very funny problem, that this module hangs the whole system.
Thanks to everybody for his inputs
