606.0. "RCM no help command" by HLFS00::HAANS_E (C-YA AGAIN ... ON MY WAY BACK) Thu May 15 1997 08:00

    Hi,

Anybody seen this behaviour ? We replaced a RIO server control module
because the old one didn't go to enable state anymore.
Now after a few settings the new module works fine and all commands
function except the RCM>HELP or RCM>? command...
This worked on the old one ok.

Has it been removed in a newer firmware or so? Where do the commands
come from, the RIO board itself or from the sadle module besides the
SRM rom (That is on the sadle, is it ?)

    Thanks,

    Erik

I think all the commands are from the rcm module once console
code wakes it up or jumps to it with ctrl]ctrl]rcm

    rcm>?
    rcm>help
do any of the other commands work?
    rcm>status
    rcm>reset
    etc...

could trying reseting rcm back to factory defaults

depending on rcm version removing external power supply from rcm
    and install jumper
J6 if rcm has no orange relay on it
J7 if rcm has orange relay on it
then power up the system to >>> this should reset the rcm back
    to factory defaults
powerdown remove jumper and reinstall external power supply
maybe this will get rcm help working again??

just some ideas our lab system ? help seem to work on com1 to vt510
    com1-h8571-j-bc16e-vt510

might want to try this jumper reset on the old rcm module also?

Will post pointer to MOP-loadable RCMSETUP.SYS and floppy bootable
RCMSETUP.FLP in next reply, coupled with instructions on how to use
    them..

Bill,
the rcm_setup script has not been run on that RIO module.
The text for the help command resides in nvram on the module but
it has to be loaded by the script.
I was under impression that manufacturing was running that
script on all RIO's.
You can copy it from wrk:[mopload]rcm_setup.sys and 'cat' it
over the network to a rawhide.

606.3RCM setup file for MFG defaultsHARMNY::CUMMINSThu May 15 1997 16:2926
The files can be obtained from:

      HARMNY::FIRM03:[RAWHIDE.PUBLIC]RCMSETUP.SYS       # MOP-loadable file
      HARMNY::FIRM03:[RAWHIDE.PUBLIC]RCMSETUP.FLP       # Floppy image

    To use them:

      1. Copy MOP-loadable file to your local MOP server
         ..or..
Insert FAT-formatted diskette that's had RCMSETUP.FLP dropped on it

      2. At SRM console, do the following:

         P00>>> cat mopdl:rcmsetup/ewa0 >setup # if Ethernet MOP load
         ..or..
P00>>> load fat # if floppy load
         P00>>> show device floppy #
         P00>>> cat fat:rcmsetup/dva0 >setup #

      3. Then do the following:

P00>>> setup # execute setup file

Note that doing this setup will among other things zero out the
NVRAM region used by SHOW POWER for logging environmental events.
It will also reset the RCM escape sequence/password, etc..

    Thanks for the response,

I will contact the customer and try to get it working this way.
Will report back here if everything works ok then.
