580.0. "B3002-AA mixed with B3002-AB ???" by PANTER::AUBERT () Tue Apr 29 1997 12:20

    I have an Alphaserver 4100 5/300 0MB with 4 cpus (B3002-AA).
    I have to replace cpu #3. Logistics told me that the module B3002-AA
    (uncached) is replaced by the B3002-AB (cached module).

    Is it possible to mix cached and uncached cpus ?
    Is there a minimum Firmware revision to do that ?

    Thanks for any answer.

    Mixing cached and uncached CPUs is not supported. Mixing different
    speed CPUs is not supported. I'm surprised that Logistics would give
    you this kind of feedback.

    Thierry,

    the B3002-AA was never manufactured it was a 1MB cache module,it must be
    B3001-CA you have, that is the 300MHz uncached CPU part number.

    I know this does not answer your question re mixing cached and
    uncached, in theory it should work but I will let the higher powers
    than me answer that question officially for you.

    Since this site is CERN, are these early protos we're dealing with
    here? .-1 is correct that we never productized the 1MB CPUs. And to
    reiterate, mixing uncached and cached CPUs is definitely not supported.

    That is correct, we never productized B3002-AA. The only 1MB cache
    modules that were built were very early lab protos, so I'd be very
    surprised if there were indeed 1MB boards at CERN.

580.5I have B3001-CA, not B3002-AAPANTER::AUBERTWed Apr 30 1997 05:4212
    First of all THANKS to all for your fast answers.

    I was wrong. The cpus on that system are B3001-CA but in the
    "AlphaServer 4100 Service Manual" you can read "B3002-AA 300MHz CPU,
    uncached" !!! and no mention about B3001-CA ?

    My problem is over as I can order through Logistics the B3001-CA.

    Thanks again to all.
    Regards,
