568.0. "Beep sound from 4100 and keyborad?" by HGOVC::EDMONDLEUNG () Mon Apr 14 1997 12:26

    Hi,

One of our customers has ported their coding from VAX to
AlphaServer 4100 and they have found there is no Beep sound from
the machine. By asking with Digital's MCS support, they know that
AlphaServer 4100 does not have an internal speaker and the keyboard is
pretty dumb either, and thus there is no beep sound at all.

If that's true. do we have any suggestion for this customer to equip
any additional h/w to enable the beep function? Alternatively, are
there any ways to enable the beep by other means? It is very vital for
this customer's operation to get a notable signal when warning/error
    break out.

Besides, as this customer wants to capture the DW Motif screen for
documentation, can we capture the screen as in MS Windows? This customer
is using DW Motif 1.2-4 CDE environment.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

The 4100/4000 platform's PCI motherboard includes logic for a speaker
connection, including a 4-pin connector. One could make the connection.
Not sure how one would run the two-wire cable outside a closed-up box..
And you may get antenna effects resulting in FCC emissions violations
(i.e. a speaker connection is not officially supported on 4100/4000).

If truly a show-stopper for your customer, you may be interested to
note that a variant of the existing 4100/4000 design is due out this
summer, and it will come equipped with a speaker. Contact Jeff Robie
(product management) for details at MSBCS::ROBIE.

Re: "a variant of the existing 4100/4000 design" It wouldn't be a system
called after a drinking vessel made from a cheap alloy you are referring
    to would it Bill ?

568.3Possible to add other devices /keyboardHGOVC::EDMONDLEUNGFri Apr 18 1997 03:2911
    Hi,

Thanks for the information. Yes. As I've mentioned on my mail. This
customer really wants to have this feature and it's critical for their
    application.

How about the keyboard or other external devices which this customer
can add in order to get the beep sound or other alert effect?

    Thanks,
    Edmond

Every keyboard I've ever worked with has always has bell support. Guess
I'm not sure what you believe the issue to be (assuming, as you say,
that keyboard bell would meet the customer's needs)? Speaker support is
one thing; keyboard bell is quite another.

I take back my last reply. I've just been informed that PC keyboards
don't have bells! If my aforementioned comments re: (unsupported by
DIGITAL) addition of a speaker to an AlphaServer 4100/4000 box and/or
my note about the soon-to-be-announced 4100/4000 platform variant won't
meet your customer's needs, then I don't know what else to say.

Sorry for confusion I may have caused in .4

The United States Federal Communications Commission does not have
   regulatory jurisdiction in Asia.

Check for and comply with any applicable local radio frequency
emissions requirements -- and if permitted, (carefully) drill out
through one of the bulkheads and install a shielded connector.
