Hi, I have received a 4100 that was meant to be upgraded at a customers site from a 300MHz CPU to a 466MHz CPU. The current output on the operator panel is P0 FAIL 04 FROM0 The output on the terminal is SROM V1.1 on cpu0 Sctr 0 -XSROM code CHKSM fail cpu0 Sctr 2 -XSROM code CHKSM fail cpu0 only after replacing the backplane the output changed to SROM V1.1 on cpu0 Sctr 0 -XSROM deadr PTTRN fail cpu0 Sctr 2 -XSROM deadr PTTRN fail cpu0 There are no further fault indications on any of the LED's. It does not matter what type of CPU is installed the system hangs. I was told that the firmware upgrade was performed as described in the manual and when the power reset was performed that was it. I have ordered a set of B3040, B3050, and a REV F3 power control module. Can someone explain what the console message part "FROM" means? I suspect it to be Flash ROM, but I have not found a document where the short code is explained. Any ideas in what the cause could be otherwise are apreciated. Thank's Michael

Which backplane did you replace? Am guessing from your note that you incorrectly replaced the system motherboard rather than the PCI motherboard (Saddle). The system flash ROM (FROM) lives on the Saddle. Power-up OCP display failure codes are described in the AlphaServer 4100/4000 Service Manual - in the Control Panel chapter; Table 2-1. They're also described in the AlphaServer 4100 Configuration and Installation Guide in the "If Power-up Fails" section. I'm surprised you found this information difficult to find. Did you actually look at any of the documentation? The table in the Service Manual says FROM0 is Flash ROM0 and tells the reader that this part resides on the PCI motherboard. If you swapped the PCI motherboard and not the system motherboard, then the next likely suspect is the PCI Bridge card (aka the Horse module). Let us know the results. BC | |||||

Hi, I had replaced the Horse and Saddle modules without any changes. Only after changing the system mother board did the result slightly change as indicated in the original notes entry. As you recommended I replaced the Horse and Saddle with a newly ordered set and nothing changes. So the only chance that I can see right now is to order a new system mother board and replace it. Hi, after changing the system motherboard again the system runs. No matter which of the other modules are used it works. So I know, that after the power off which was needed to upgrade to the 466MHz CPU's the system motherboard died. Also the first spare was effected in the same way. I replaced the system motherboard and after checkout I upgraded the firmware according to the documentation. Repowering the system several times did not change anything, so I installed the 466MHz CPU's and it worked as well. I have no idea what caused the initial problem. Thank's Michael |
