| can you post an entire dssi topology including disk types,
Are you clustered to another machine?
Did reboots ever work? If so what has changed?
After you reboot do you see device PIA0 or PIB0?
Are there any errors?
If you do a shutdown (without a reboot) and then boot (without an init)
do you see the same thing?
On the surface it sounds like an interupt from one of the disks (or
HSD controller) is being lost, when the OS hands control back to
the console resulting in the disk (or HSD) closing the port..
This is ONLY a SWAG based on limited knowledge of your complete
configuration..
Also, what version of VMS are you running?

| Hi Dave,
I tried to answer to your questions.
The DSSI topology is the next:
|--------| |------- | |--------| |--------| |--------|
|AS4100 | | AS2000 | | AS2000 | | R400X | |AS4100 |
| | | | | | | | | |
|kfpsa 5|---|kfesa 7|--x-----------|kfesa 4|--| 0 1 2 |--|kfpsa 6 |
|kfpsa 5|---|kfesa 7|--|-------x---|kfesa 4|--| 0 1 2 |--|kfpsa 6 |
| | | | | | | | | | | |
---------- ---------- | | ---------- ---------- ----------
|3 |3
|--| |--|
|H | |H |
|S | |S |
|D | |D |
|5 | |5 |
|0 | |0 |
---- ----
The numbers mean the DSSI ID.In the R400X pedestal are 2x3 RF74.
The reboot never work properly, after all reboots the disks are missing.
But if I wait after shutdown approximately 10 minutes, the dssi disks seens
at the console prompt without switch off, switch on.
Anyway if I waiting some minutes before boot the system, everything is O.K.
It is very mysterious for me.
I hope it is sufficient information for you.
Thanks in advance.
Robert.

| re.2
Thanks for the info and as you may suspect I have more questions.
Does the reboot problem occur with either AS4100?
Do reboots on the AS2000 systems work okay?
Do you lose both rails?
Where is the system disk?
Have you tried it with boot_reset on?

517.4 | does behavior change if one of the 2000's is shut down | WONDER::CARLSON | Dave | Thu Mar 06 1997 16:03 | 7 |
| re.2 Also, is it just the RF drives that you are losing?
Set host to the RF host and make sure FIVEDIME is set to 0..
You need this for a quad host dssi configuration. Otherwise the
RF drive will only allow 3 hosts to talk to it at any one time.

If the problem you're experiencing is not related to FIVEDIME
being non-zero, another thing you might try in order to learn
more about this problem is:
issue the console SHOW DEVICE command more than one time
If done, do you see the devices on the second attempt? A SHOW
DEVICE after VMS shutdown will force a PCI reset. The adapters,
including the KFPSA, are reconfigured and the console's KFPSA
driver is restarted at the time the KFPSA is sized (SHO DEV).
The virtual circuits (VCs) and MSCP connections between the host
and the HSD50s are lost when the PCI bus is reset. When SHO DEV is
done after shutdown, if the driver is doing the wrong thing, then
the VCs might not be reformed correctly. The fact that the devices
are seen if you wait ten minutes hints at the fact that the MSCP
connections are torn down (at the HSD) after a timeout period has
expired, so when the SHO DEV is issued at the host, things then
work correctly.
A question: do all the systems in your configuration exhibit this
problem or is it only the AlphaServer 4100s / KFPSAs?
Thanks,
BC

| Re.2,3,
Here are the answers to your questions:
The reboot procedure on the other AS4100 is O.K at all times, and
rebooting the AS2000 systems everything is okay.
Yes ,I lose both rails on the problematical AS4100.
The system disk is on the HSD50.
Yes ,the DSSI disks are losing only.
The FIVEDIME is 1 on the DSSI disks, but I can try to set it to zero
only at the weekend.
Re.5,
when the DSSI disks are missing, issuing SHOW DEV one or more
times the disks are not seen until 10-12 minutes.
This problem is only AS4100 /KFPSAs.

517.7 | so the HSD50 drives are seen? right? | WONDER::CARLSON | Dave | Tue Mar 11 1997 11:18 | 10 |
| re.6 I think when you set fivedime to 0 your problems will go away.
One strange thing is that you say only 1 4100 has this afflication and
the other is okay? Confirm that both console versions are the same.
Also check that console parameters are the same for both, boot_reset,
mem_test,etc.
Which 4100 has the problem? The one using dssi id's 5 or 6?

the problem.Many thanks for you.
