511.0. "PCI I/O expansion" by HGOVC::PATRICKNG () Thu Feb 27 1997 09:59

    Hi,

    I am working for a data warehouse configuration for a customer. In
    order to meet their budget, AlphaServer 4000 with PCI I/O expansion is
    the only choose.

    I couldn't find the part number PCI I/O expansion alone. The only
    part number that I can find is DH-53Z2A-AA which is PCI I/O expansion
    upgrade - the old system drawer has to be returned.

    Is anyone know the part number for PCI I/O expansion for
    AlphaServer 4000? When do we ship the expansion module?

    Is there any plan to implement PCI I/O expansion on AlphaServer 4100?

    Thanks,
    Patrick

511.1Dodge/Wrangler (II)/DurangoMOVMON::DAVISThu Feb 27 1997 10:5733
    You can't get the PCI I/O expansion parts now because they won't fit in
    existing drawers. Here's what the scenario looks like, where Dodge is
    the 4100 (4 CPUs, 8 PCI), Wrangler is the current 4000 (2 CPUs, 8 PCI),
    Wrangler II is the new 4000 without I/O (2 CPUs, 8 PCI), and Durango is
    the new 4000 with I/O (2 CPUs 16 PCI):

              +--------+            +----------+              +-------+
              |  4100  |            |  4000    |              | 4100  |
              |(Dodge) |            |(Durango) |              |(Dodge)|
              +--------+            +----------+              +-------+
                    ^                ^        ^                 ^
        CPU upgrade |    I/O upgrade |        | I/O upgrade     | CPU upgrade
             Drawer |         Drawer |        | PCI option      | Drawer
                    |                |        |                 |
                +----------------------+    +-----------------------+
                |    4000 (Wrangler)   |    |   4000 (Wrangler II)  |
                | Dodge sheet metal | | Durango sheet metal |
                | Wrangler motherboard |    |  Durango motherboard  |
                +----------------------+    +-----------------------+
                      CURRENT BOX                NEW BOX (APRIL)

    So, no, you can't ever upgrade a 4100 (Dodge)with more PCI, just the 4000.
    The current box upgrades with a drawer swap. If you buy a Wrangler II
    box, you can upgrade with just the I/O parts (Horse and Saddle
    modules).

    I think there will also be a "side-grade" part number, where you can go
    from a 4100 (with a Dodge motherboard, 4 CPU capable with 8 PCI) to a
    4000 (with a Durango motherboard, 2 CPU capable with 16 PCI).

    Can we identify if the customer has an old box from the part number?

    i.e. D*-53***-** new
         D*-52***-** old

    thanks, Les.
511.3H7150-AA or DH-53Z2A-AAVYGER::HENDERSONLWed Jun 04 1997 09:0314
    Les,

    you are correct.

    D*-53***-** is new Wrangler II which can be upgraded by H7150-AA PCI
    Expansion option to 16 slots.

    D*-52***-** old Wrangler Box which needs a BOX swap option DH-53Z2A-AA to
    upgrade to 16 slots.
