507.0. "RAID Cntrl Configuration Problems" by NBOFS1::SCHALLER (BERNI) Mon Feb 24 1997 04:10

Hi all,

thereis something going wrong with Raid-controllers in Alphaserver 4100.
Alphaserver FW: 3.0
Raid Controller FW: 2.42

Config with one KZPSC-XA 1 Channel Raid

Bus Slot Controller Devices
PCI 1	5 empty
	4	KZPDA DKCnnn
	3	KZPSA DKBnnn
	2	empty

PCI 0	5	empty
4	KZPSC-XA DRAn first Raid Controller
	3	FDDI
	2	VGA
	.
	1	internal CDROM RRD42	DKAnn
	0	Reserved

This config works well.
-----------------------------------
ADD ON second RAID Controller

Config with "Two" KZPSC-XA 1 Channel Raid

Bus Slot Controller Devices
PCI 1	5 KZPSC-XA DRAnn second Raid Controller
	4	KZPDA DKCnnn
	3	KZPSA DKBnnn
	2	empty

PCI 0	5	empty
4	KZPSC-XA DRDnn first Raid Controller
	3	FDDI
	2	VGA
	.
	1	internal CDROM RRD42	DKAnn
	0	Reserved

This Config takes the DRAnn (re0..)devices to the second Raid Controller
and the new DRDnn (re8...) devices to the first Raid Controller. WHY??
This is absolut fatal because device naming doesn't match anymore.

Until now I thought in PCI 0 there should be DRAnn and
in PCI 1 there should then be DRBnn.

When running RCU Utility Version 3.3, it comes up with
SWXCR #1	as first RAID Controller
SWXCR #2	as second RAID COntroller
this is what I assumed to see. OK.

Why doesn't this sequence match when doeing a >>> SHO DEVICE or
when booting Digital Unix 4.0a.

Bye
Berni

    Berni,

I've made a correction in the bus placement of the internal SCSI
controller in your configuration. The CDROM controller is
actually on Bus 1. The SRM console assigns devices starting on
PCI bus 1. Hopefully this will answer your question about the DRA
devices seeming to move as a second controller is added.

    Regards,

    Dennis H.

FWIW, UNIX assigns sizes and names devices in the same order as the SRM
console. We size PCI1 first to insure DKA will always be the embedded,
NCR810-based CD/ROM. This was deemed important because Digital UNIX
installation instructions tell the user to BOOT DKAXXX.
