461.0. "system temp is too high Dunix 4.0b" by CSC32::HUTMACHER () Mon Feb 03 1997 10:10

    Hi good morning have a alphaserver4100 just upgraded to Dunix
    ver4.0b
    as system is coming up it loads the environmental system monitor,
    then says that the system temp is too high, will shutdown the system
    in 15 minutes and does?
    this system was running error free at Dunix ver4.0A
    disabling environmental demons allows the system run error free
    is this a ver4.0b issue? i dont think so, because other systems
    including ours here at the csc center seem to run okay.
    if a hardware problem is the PCM module likely?? or other hardware?

    any input appreciated thanks jim hutmacher mvhs colorado csc 592-5561

461.1Is the system in question a proto or a real system?LANDO::CUMMINSMon Feb 03 1997 10:4121
 This means one of the following:

   1) You don't have an RCM in your system and this is expected behavior,
      but only if a proto since all systems were supposed to ship with RCM;
   2) Your system does have an RCM, but it is somehow broken, or..
   3) Console is unable to tell there's an RCM present due to some unknown
      firmware/hardware problem.

 An experiment to determine if console sees the RCM temperature sensor:

   P00>>>ls iic_rcm_temp

 If an iic_rcm_temp device shows up under console, try the following on the
 system in question (excerpt from SRM console power-up script):

   P00>>> d iic_rcm_temp:0 ac -b
   P00>>> d iic_rcm_temp:0 02
   P00>>> d iic_rcm_temp:0 ee
   P00>>> d iic_rcm_temp:0 aa
   P00>>> eval -ix `e iic_rcm_temp:0 | find 2` >bar
   P00>>> echo "System temperature is" `cat bar` "degrees C"
461.2Replace RCMTMCUKA::ROWELLPaul Rowell @BBPThu May 15 1997 11:393
    Just had exactly the same fault as in .0, replacing the RCM fixed it.
