| ...tick...tick...tick...
DUPS training has just been given in the UK, and they were still
telling Digital field folks and Digital business partners that upgrades
to EV6 would follow.
The sooner we get a clear statement, widely distributed, the better.

4000 family PID mentions EV6 as growth path inside the family,
BUT gives no details...

Performance estimates are given, but no system information is presented.

405.9 | reality check... | NYOSS1::MONASCH | I wrote the DECmate games | Fri Feb 07 1997 09:36 | 10 |
| As the writer of the DUPS AlphaServer presentation for this quarters
DUPS, rest assured that I checked the fact out and received the OK to
say UNDER NON-DISCLOSURE, "EV6 will be supported in the 4000 family".
There was no mention of "how" or "when". The next effect of the
statement is to provide end-user customers with the investment
protection message.

405.10 | Not as of today | MOVMON::DAVIS | | Mon Feb 10 1997 15:46 | 5 |
| There is no guarantee as of today that EV6 will be supported on the
currently-shipping AlphaServer 4000 systems. Please do not set any
customer expectations on this scenario.

405.11 | need to put a stake in the ground | TROOA::MSCHNEIDER | [email protected] | Mon Feb 10 1997 18:14 | 16 |
| Gotta love it .... the PID says EV6, nobody can explain how. From the
last note I suspect a drawer swap may be in order ... like the 4000 to
4100 upgrade. Maybe worse in that the guts change and memory and other
pieces aren't transferable.
Regarding customer expectations ... well either it will or it won't.
We need to make up our minds. If not then get it out of the PID. Yes
I know about all the PID disclaimers and what not, but don't believe
for one minute that sales and marketing folks won't run with
"upgradable to EV6" like they did with Turbolaser will run NT a year or
so ago, when in fact there were no firm plans to put NT on the
Turbolaser.
If the 4x00 family will not support EV6 it is a bit disconcerting from
the investment protection message point of view. 2x00 family survived
2 chip generations.

IMHO:
One of the key success factors in selling Rawhide family is
investement protection. Most of our materials connect together
"most modern servers", "investement protection" and "EV6
technologies". So even our materials don't state or promise
any concrete upgrades, it still builds up customer expectations.
4000 series story without _strong_ EV6 upgrade messages will
cause _major_ customer dissatisfaction! And of course, it would
take away one of possible key winning factors from sales!
