The following has been stated elsewhere in this conference, but is worth mentioning in this string as well... It was only fairly recently learned that upon saving/exiting from the AlphaBIOS CMOS or Advanced CMOS setup, AlphaBIOS will change the shared MEMORY_TEST environment variable setting to the default of PARTIAL. Under certain circumstances, it can be changed to NONE by AlphaBIOS as well. The MEMORY_TEST EV will also get set PARTIAL/NONE if AlphaBIOS finds the NVRAM to be invalid. In this case, AlphaBIOS rewrites the NVRAM with default settings. The next release of AlphaBIOS (V5.30?) which will ship on the V4.0 FW Update CD/ROM, will use a default MEMORY_TEST setting of FULL to help avoid many of the problems experienced in the Field (such as panics which booting UNIX) when MEMORY_TEST is not set FULL. |
