Subj: Alphaserver 4100 - Power Supplies - Info Message
Hello All,
1. Current Share Cables
Please be aware that multiple power supply configurations REQUIRE a current
share cable connecting the power supplies together. The Current share cable is
shipped with the Power Supply Upgrade and plugs into the 4 pin socket in the
power supplies.
You will need more than one power supply if you have three or more CPU's. The
SRM console will print a message if you have insufficent number of power
supplies for the number of CPU's installed.
>>> You help please: I would be willing to write up a blitz if concensus thinks
it's necessary.
2. Intermittent Power Downs
We were investigating two 'reject' pedestals that were returned from a Customer
Site based on system instability. Both systems were single power supply
configurations. We found that one of the power supplys would cause an immediate
shut down if 'tapped'. (This was a tap with the fingers not a 10 lb hammer!)
You may want to try a 'tap / mild hit' test if you become involved with
machines experiencing intermittent power downs.
3. Combo Card, OCP and Saddle (B3050) connectors
Power control is routed through a series of connectors. There is a 2 conductor
wire from the combo card to the saddle card which permits the combo to control
system power on/off. On some systems this cable was not connected and a jumper
was installed on the Saddle. If you experience intermittent power cycling,
please check that the wireing is secure. If the customer is not using the power
down feature of the combo and you are experiencing random unexplained power
cycling you may want to put a jumper on the saddle.
