Datamation Readers Name DIGITAL AlphaServer 4100 "Server of the Year"
... AlphaServer platform honored for unprecedented third straight
year...
MAYNARD, Mass. -- February 4, 1997 -- For an unprecedented third
consecutive year, the DIGITAL AlphaServer 64-bit platform has taken top
honors in the prestigious "1997 Products of the Year" voting by readers
of Datamation Magazine, a Cahners publication. Named IS managers choice
for "1997 Server of the Year," the AlphaServer 4100 system succeeds the
past two years' winners, the AlphaServer 8400 and AlphaServer 2100
models, respectively.
In announcing its pick of top server systems for 1997, Datamation said,
"DIGITAL continues to lead the industry with a fully 64-bit combination
of hardware and operating systems -- DIGITAL UNIX and OpenVMS ....
DIGITAL consistently achieves some of the highest industry benchmarks."
"We are pleased that Datamation readers continue to recognize the
superior performance and affordability designed in to the 64-bit
AlphaServer platform," said Pauline Nist, DIGITAL vice president of
AlphaServer Business. "HP, IBM, Sun and others continue to follow the
DIGITAL lead. But they and their customers still face years of costly
migrations just to reach the power, scalability, and value which the
Alpha platform delivers today."
The AlphaServer 4100 system is the industry's first midrange
implementation of 64-bit very large memory (VLM64) capacity, which
provides extremely fast database and application performance. Like all
AlphaServer systems, it takes advantage of the industry's fastest
processors, advanced clustering technology, thousands applications
optimized for high-performance 64-bit computing, and a choice of
DIGITAL UNIX, OpenVMS, or Windows NT operating systems.
The AlphaServer 4100 platform is ideal for a wide variety of
applications and can be easily scaled to meet the changing needs of
large enterprises, small companies, and departments. It is designed to
provide high transaction throughput, availability, and reliability for
Internet commerce, data warehousing, mail and messaging, and business
and technical applications. Prices start at $42,500.

comprehensive, unbiased performance testing to help users determine
the best fit between their application needs and available systems
and configurations. AIM's service helps users reduce the cost of
evaluating new systems, and provides valuable broad-spectrum
performance visibility for vendors that submit systems to be tested.
AIM is an independent organization, as opposed to a vendor
consortium, which allows AIM to bring an expert eye to performance
measurement, not restrained by objectives of consortium members.
