127.0. "Mib for SMS event-to-trap function?" by NEWVAX::WHITMAN (gun control = 5% gun + 95% control) Thu Apr 24 1997 11:14
Anyone aware of a MIB available for winnt which includes trap-type
definitions for the performance monitor counters? I'm expecting to use the SMS
event-to-trap capability to generate SNMP traps, but need to have a mib which
we can load into HP Open-view to catch the traps SMS sends.
Perf2mib (on the resource kit) will build a mib which would allow the
network management service to poll for counters, but it does not build any trap
definitions so errors can get flagged asynchronously. I assume, because the
user must provide part of the OID when he/she runs perf2mib, that perf2mib must
write something into the registry so the correct numbers get put into the SNMP
trap message. This would mean I'd have to execute perf2mib on every machine I
choose to monitor so each machine's registry gets updated the same.
The SMS documentation seems a bit vague about whether the SNMP traps it
generates are intended to be read ONLY by SMS trap filters or if they are also
intended to be read by any NMS that meets the "SNMP community" criteria (in my
case HP Openview.)
Can anyone verify or dispute my understanding of how the SMS traps are
working here?
Can anyone point me to a MIB for winnt that will allow traps generated by
SMS event-to-trap to be read and understood by HP Openview?
Thanks
Al

127.1 | mib for sms event to trap translator | NEWVAX::WHITMAN | gun control = 5% gun + 95% control | Tue Apr 29 1997 14:17 | 6 |
| Built a MIB for HP Openview to catch traps generated by SMS Event to trap
translator.
See example MIB in note 288.0 and modified as in 288.3 of MOLAR::SNMP
