35.0. "PMDF-LAN,PMDF-X400 and user Agents." by QCAV01::KRISH () Wed May 14 1997 04:54

Hi :

We are exploring the possibility of using the PMDF components
on Openvms 7.1.
We have mails coming from pc's through (Ms Mail,cc Mail) and through X.400.
We understand that PMDF has the following components,

PC Clients X.400 Clients
    | |
    | PMDF-LAN |PMDF-X400
    | |
----------------------------------------------
		PMDF-MTA
-----------------------------------------------
    |
    | PMDF-ACCESS
    |
User Agents

We understand that user agents are to be written over the components
PMDF-LAN and PMDF-X400 to ,say receive mails sent through MS-Mail
or to receive mails coming from x400.
Do we require PMDF-ACCESS to write this user agent ?
Are API's available to program at this level ?

Pointers are Welcome

Now I'm not the authority on Innosoft's product line, but to my knowledge PMDF
Access is not used for anything to do with user agents, nor is any of their
software to my knowledge. The "access" is just that--allows another machine
to access the PMDF MTA/MR, similar to using a remote Message Router if you're
familiar with that.

Find out who their customer is and send some sales force in there to save them
while there's still time. I was unaware that one could even write a user
agent "over" an MTA application. Sell them an assessment!!!

There are already enough user agents out there being used and one should not
have to re-invent the wheel. If you still want to write a user agent (a
non-trivial task I might add), I am not aware of Innosoft's API to such. You
can call them directly to inquire--they'd be happy to help (818.916.3900 is
the number if I'm not mistaken).

Innosoft has an API for PMDF. The manual is not given out unless
requested. (You have to know about it before you can find out about
    it.)

But they shouldn't need to write user agents. Contact
[email protected] (Sales) or [email protected] (tech
support), or point them to http://www.innosoft.com?
