What's the difference between a PCI master slot and a PCI slave slot, in DMCC terms ? Which slots on which backplanes are slaves ? The "practical guide to ... using a bridged backplane" on the AYO web site (at http://www.ayo.dec.com/oem/public/dmcc/gobi_nt.html) says: Graphics: PBXGA-JA or PBXGA-JB (#9 Vision 330 PCI graphics) will work in any primary slot [slots 1-3]. Our suggestion would be to use Slot 3 as this is a slave slot, and leaves the master slots (1 and 2) free for other cards which may need them. I wasn't aware that any Digital systems had PCI slave slots, but then I know dangerously little about hardware. regards john

The issue is an x86/alpha variation, as i understand it. alpha, being a 'real computer' (tm 8)>>) provides enuf control lines to make all pci slots mastering. x86, on 'tother hand, has a limited number ('architecturally limited") number of sets of control lines, so it can only have certain slots as PCI Bus masters.... regards dwp

"x86 can only have certain slots as bus masters" OK, I love PCs, I can believe that. Now, where is it documented (for our backplanes) which ones are masters and which are slaves? (or does the question not make sense?). The words "master" or "slave" don't seem to be in the new combined backplane docs. regards john

Its not in the backplane book. The backplanes don't have a limitation... (I can't, off hand, find it in the EBM3x-Px book either....) regards dwp |
