221.0. "DE205 with K2 and WNT 4.0 ???" by COPS01::SEGREST (Mid-Atlantic TOEM Field Application Engineer) Wed May 07 1997 12:33

    Greetings,

I am trying to get my DE205 ISA Ethernet adapter to work in a 7-slot
backplane with a K2 running Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.

The adapter was not automagicaly found by WNT during the installation.
So, I installed it via the menu by selecting the Digital Etherworks
Turbo option. This does not seem to work... There are no lights
illuminated on the DE205 itself and the system does not seem to find
it after the reboot is completed.

Has anyone used the DE205 in this configuration ???

Is this the right driver choice ???

Should Windows NT automaticaly find the DE205 ???

Is it possible that there may be a contention for the default interrupt
and address used by the DE205 (5, D000) in this configuration ???

Should at least one of the indicators on the DE205 illluminate and does
the lack there of indicate a hardware problem ???

    Thanks in advance....

Bob,

The DE205 is NOT automatically detected by Windows NT.

The steps to installing a DE205 into an alpha system are.

1. Plug the board into you're NT system.

2. Switch on the system (do not allow it to boot NT yet)

3. Choose setup from the alphabios.

4. Select the Run a maintenance program option.

5. Run NICAXP.EXE from the floppy provided with the DE205.
( This will give you the IRQ,DMA and memory addresses so that
you can enter this when installing the windows nt driver)

6. Boot NT, add the driver (also using the floppy provided), use
the information gained from step 5 to configure the driver.

    Hi Bob,

    My .02 cent comment:

Iain is right, I got the floppy from the web at:
    http://npbwww.hpn.lkg.dec.com/dr/nics/drivers/ (Etherworks 3 section)
I tried the latest interim version 2.52 without luck as well.

I tried NICAXP and just about all possible combinaison (addresses),
and I could never get my DE205 to work with NT 4.0 an Alpha
PCI 64-275. The best I could do is getting the domain and
server name broadcasted, but I could not ping the system
either in or out. Trying to access a shared NETbeui resource
results in timeout and other network errors.
Also if there are conflicting addresses, the mouse pointer would
not come up on a NT boot.

I tried 2 boards with the same result.

I gave up after wasting 2 full days on the DE205.
Get a DE435 or DE450. Much easier, much better
    performance too...

    Just my 2 cents...

    Vince.
