194.0. "VRM socket on Atacama" by RLTIME::COOK () Mon Mar 31 1997 16:59

Are there any plans to put the VRM socket onto Atacama? Takara on Atacama
could be very attractive to one of my customers, but I don't like the idea
of a special and expensive power supply just for the 3.3v support.

194.1Revision C01 has that functionalityIRNBRU::GRANTIain Grant, E&RT, DTN 823-3532Tue Apr 01 1997 15:279
Al,

The rev C01 boards now have the VRM socket and also the single connector
for the CPU cables ( reset, hd led ...)

Unfortunately there is no release date for this new revision.

194.2where's me dictionary ?BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Tue Apr 01 1997 17:556
    What does VRM socket mean ?

    Is it the same as "ATX-compatible PSU (connector)", or something different ?

194.3VRM :== PentiumPRO 3.3v SupportRLTIME::COOKTue Apr 01 1997 18:0820

If you look on page 37 of the new OEM product guide, on the list of DMCC passive
backplane product features, you'll see something called "PentiumPRO 3.3V
Support". It took me a while to figure this out as it is some kind of
internal Digital code that means that there is a VRM (Voltage Regulator
Module) socket. With this socket you can buy a module outside of Digital
that will convert the 5v coming from a common power supply to 3.3V and not
have to source a power supply with a 3.3V tap when your building an Alpha
(K2 or Takara) system. Most PentiumPRO PICMG cards include their own
regulator and don't need a VRM module, this is generally only useful for Alpha
where it is incredibly useful (maybe critical). Unfortunately, it will not
show up on the Atacama anytime soon and that is the one place where I could
use it.

I should add that I don't think any VRMs have been qualified with Takara yet.

194.5Aren't PCs fun...BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Wed Apr 02 1997 10:246
    I imagined (in my ignorance) that the rapid rise of ATX PSUs meant that
    new designs would use ATX PSUs with neat features like programmable
    outputs and such, rather than kluges like VRMs. See Intel's web site
    for list of vendors, or even your local retail PC shop! But then ATX
    brings along a brand new incompatible connector and other such PC-world
    fun.

I had some high hopes for the ATX PSUs as well. There do seem to be problems
with power capabilities for those supplies. A common solution across all
of the PBs does have merrit. How about from engineering? Are there any plans
to support ATX PSUs?

    1) VRM's have been tested in such Backplanes as support them.

    2) None are sold by Digital, as the interest seemed to be from
    Techncial OEm's who like to 'roll their own'.

    3) ATX psus are nice for small systems. For, eg, a 19 slot backplane
    they don't really do the job. A 'single PSU across all bps' sort of
    means either the low end is overpowered/over priced or the top end
    is underpowered....
