193.0. "Powerstorm 3D10/Number Nine Trio64/PB2GA-JA doesn't work properly on DMCC Intel (Prolog) with NT4.0 (qualified)" by ZUR01::MISCHLER (Christian Mischler - Switzerland 760-2706) Tue Mar 25 1997 13:29

Hello,

The distributor wanted to deliver an Intel (Prolog) DMCC system
to he's customer. Prior to the customers decision to buy DMCC they
tested a configuration with the Ibus Intel, the small backplane
(integrated SCSI) and Trio64 Graphics.

Now the distributor ordered the systems with the Intel Prolog board.
(Because of the PCI performance and other issues)
The operating system used is Windows 3.11. VGA works with no problem
on the graphics card. As soon as they install the generic S3 driver
from Number Nine or the special driver for this card (Hawkeye) they
get system hangs. The hang allways occurs when we are doing "heavy"
graphics operations which probably cause a big PCI load. One example
is moving a card in the Solitaire game. Sometimes it is sufficient
to open the display control panel to get the hang.
Disabling the cache in the AMIBIOS makes the system slow but there
aren't any problems anymore. If you take out the network card (which
is not configured at this time) it even doesn't work with the cache
disabled???!!!

What I tested: (allways 3D10/TRIO64)

Intel Prolog, 8 Slot backplane, Windows 3.11 DOESN'T WORK
Intel Prolog, 8 Slot backplane, onboard SCSI disabled, Adaptec, Windows3.11 DOESN'T WORK
Intel Prolog, 14 Slot backplane (7/6), NCR SCSI, Windows 3.11 DOESN'T WORK
Intel Prolog, 14 Slot backplane (7/6), NCR SCSI, Windows NT 4.0	DOESN'T WORK
Intel Prolog, 8 Slot backplane, Windows NT 4.0	DOESN'T WORK
(With this last test I first thought that it worked fine. But finally the hang occured when the
     3D Screen Saver was started)

Since the graphics option is qualified for Intel DMCC and NT, can you tell me what I did wrong?

Regards,
  Chris
