174.0. "PIP10A vs. EBM3*-PA" by SAYER::ELMORE (Steve [email protected] 4123645893) Fri Feb 14 1997 20:59

Can someone post the precise differences between the Prolog PIP10A that
our board was based on, and our board, the EBM3*-PA? I don't need
verbose details, just a list. For example:

    PIP10A	- thermal tape / CPU-fan
    EBM3*-PA	- thermal adhesive / CPU-fan

    PIP10A	- ? old BIOS
    EBM3*-PA	- ? new BIOS (what changed)

PIP10A	- published temp range 0-60	Digital verified - no
EBM3*-PA	- published temp range 0-50	Digital verified - yes

PIP10A	- Dual Processor support yes
    EBM3*-PA	- no

     ...
    etc.

    Customer asked for the above.

Also, what is Prolog's part number for our board. It used to be PIP10L or
    PIP10D or something like that.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Steve,

There were various changes to the board, Basically we did the debug work
for Prolog.

PIP10A - thermal tape / CPU-fan
EBM3*-PA - thermal tape / CPU-fan

PIP10A - ? old Bios
EBM3*-PA - Bios to Digital Spec, includes NCR (SYBIOS) 810 Bios.

PIP10A - SCSI Host Adapter
EBM3*-PA - On-board scsi removed

PIP10A - published temp
EBM3*-PA - published temp 0 - 50, Digital Verified

Board also checked against the following DEC standards

		DEC 207/2
		DEC 207/1
		DEC 102/2

PIP10A - Dual Processore support
EBM3*-PA - Second processor removed

PIP10A - Untested with digital options
EBM3*-PA - Qualified with all options in order menu ( also qualified
           with non-digital options)

PIP10A - Prolog Etch
EBM3*-PA - Special etch for Digital, completely different from PIP10A

PIP10A - No Cache supplied as standard
EBM3*-PA - Cache supplied as standard

PIP10A - Optimal BIOS setting to Prolog spec
EBM3*-PA - Optimal BIOS setting to Digital spec to improve performance.

PIP10A - Digital offers NO support.
EBM3*-PA - Supported and verified against current and future option cards.

PIP10A - Prolog manual
EBM3*-PA - Completely different to Prolog manual. It has a lot of information
about the board NOT found in the Prolog manual. It also indicates
all the various support/maintenance/warranty information standard
	   with Digital products.

For any other information check out the Prolog web site.
There will also be more information supplied on the OEM Web sites as information
becomes available.

174.2additional items- need the specific data from engSHRCTR::WADAMSMon Feb 17 1997 14:4613
Could engineering also spec out the differences of the PIP-10A/D versus
    Digital's for
    - cache (ours handles up to 256)...Prolog offers a lower performing
modules that runs into problems at 64MB and above
    - heatsink/fan combo Digital speced has higher performance attributes
    - new etch for Digital gives us class B emmissions, while PIP10A will
stay with old etch and be class A. I assume Prolog will make PIP10D
class B simultaneous with our board.
    - minor alignments of memory simms on the PIP10D...don't know if they
were changed on the PIP10A. Effects card sliding into slot properly

174.3Boot from Adaptec ? Pointer to functional spec?BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Mon Feb 17 1997 15:008
And while we're at it - do we support booting from an add-on Adaptec
    (see topic 171)?

In fact, is there a functional spec for all these enhancements to save
Engineering having to type them all up again ?

    Is anyone working this?

    Thanks,

174.5I'll try to answer your callsIRNBRU::GRANTIain Grant, E&RT, DTN 823-3532Fri Feb 21 1997 16:1022
Steve,

1. Yes there are people working these questions.

As for reply 174.2 - It looks like you've answered the questions you asked !
If you want any information on modifications Prolog have made to their PIP10A
board you will need to ask them that question. All we can supply is information
regarding the DMCC EBM3*-PA which is a special etch designed for digital.

If you look at the Prolog web page you can see that theie board (PIP10A) looks
completely different to ours.

And lastly for question 174.3, we are trying to check out adaptec cards on
the EBM3*-PA but it may be the end of March/April before any results can be
obtained.

I hope this has answered you're questions.
