160.1 | What else is needed besides DECmigrate ? | BBPBV1::WALLACE | john wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093 | Sat Jan 25 1997 11:48 | 5 |
| Would you, should you, trust DECmigrate in a production environment ?
Here today, for free, VAX binaries translated for Alpha OpenVMS. Caveats?
If that's OK, what about I/O (though by definition there isn't much in
a 3100!)?

160.2 | True...but not fast, easy, or cheap | SHRCTR::WADAMS | | Mon Jan 27 1997 14:06 | 17 |
| True about the VAX installed base and where they are frozen code wise.
The Catamount program aims to hit some of this installed base. There
are many challenges for DMCC to target this market. It is all a matter
of engineering dollars (backed by a sound business case....that
migration would occur.....I'm would guess Alpha OVMS has similar business
cases that showed how the installed base would move over...but did
not.)
Engineering would need to address OVMS 5 as another OS to support plus
spend a lot of cycles looking at VAX peripherals and outdated busses
(for option support.)
Given limited engineering cycles....the question might become...would
your chose between the next Alpha chip or a specialized program to
target the VAX base.

I assume there are drivers involved here? Therefore the
binary translation technology we have is not suitable?

| In three cases out of four, no drivers.....
A difference of 32bit code verses 64bit code.
I'll look into DECmigrate...

| two words about catamount...
too late!
should have been here a year ago. All (100%) of my MV3/4xxx bix is
gone. Last two orders last month.. I have no customers left to sell
Catamount to.
In most cases, the win-back effort is moving them from commercial PC's
to DMCC. What makes that difficult is lack of onsite support, something
they used (100%) with MVxxxx and still do with the PC's.

Minimum level for VMS for ebm21/23 (takara) VMS 7.?
(EBM21/3 has not been settled, yet...)
