Al,

I was that person who put the 'snide' comment at the bottom of the documentation
pages. This was put there because of the number of NETSCAPE support calls we were
gettting outnumbered the number of DMCC support calls. Our job is to support
DMCC not the web tools that Digital use, that's the responsibility of the local
I.S. group.

There are steps in place at the moment to get the postscript files changed
to Adobe Acrobat format. When those files are available they will also be
put up on the web pages.

How to pull files from the Documentation Pages
--- -- ---- ----- ---- --- ------------- -----
All the pages offfered by the AYR web server and written for Netscape 2.0 and
above. In order to get the postscript files from the site you need to pull
the postscript files to a local system and then print them.

This is done in Netscape by following theses steps

1. Choose the Options pull down
2. Pick General Preferences
3. From this list choose 'application/postscript' change the
'Action' at the bottom so that it 'Saves to Disk'

We are constantly trying to make it easier for people to use our web
site.

If you have any comments/thoughts please mail them to

As for the schematics they are all A3 size Shrinking them down to
A4 would make them unreadable.

If you are using a Windows 3.1/Windows 95 system I suggest that you try
the shareware software ROPS. It is a very good postscript viewer.

Few pointers for viewing/printing postscript from PC

    1. ROPS shareware as mentioned by Ian
    2. ghostscript freeware
    3. PSview - Hyper-G PostScript viewer very slow but works
    		http://www.iicm.edu/gorasche/psview
    4. Does Adobe sells commercial postcript viewer/printer?

Vikas,

How about putting it into the ERT public site. \\cabnt1\ertinfo\
Then we can map a network drive from the laptops.

Feel free to do that. I do not know much about the NT share business,
    I am UNIX hack :-)

"The viewer is available without any fees for academic, research and
    internal business purposes."

So, I would think author does not mind us using his software.

    - Vikas

P.S. The nice thing about this software is that it is selfcontained,
unlike ghostview, in which you have to install ghostscript, fonts etc
    before it works.

Tried it with Atacama.ps, it failed on page 4...probably out of memory.

158.10Can we distribute in PDF or does that leave UNIX/VMS people out?BBPBV1::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbp. +44 860 675093Sat Jan 25 1997 11:2913
OK so far, but isn't there an even simpler approach: Ayr get a copy of
Adobe Acrobat Distiller and someone gives them some training in how to
use it to convert PS to PDF, then we in the field use the PDF instead.

Or are there major flaws in this scheme ? (e.g. can Acrobat actually do
    A3?)

    regards
    john

    ps
PostScript is dying. HP are pulling out of the PostScript printer
business, if a recent story I heard is true.

Somehow IR does it. The way I understand it from one of the product managers,
we send a PS file to IR and they fun a batch jobs every few days that creates
a PDF file from the PS file.

158.13PDF files available very soonIRNBRU::GRANTIain Grant, E&RT, DTN 823-3532Mon Jan 27 1997 12:1617
Guys,

We have just had all the .ps files converted to PDF format, this was a straight PS
to PDF convert so no bookmarks exist for any of the docs.

Also, because of limitations with WORD a lot of our documents are split into
seperate PS files, when converted to PDF format they are smaller but are still
split into seperate files.

The new PDf files will be available on the internal page very soon, I believe they
will also be available on the OEM web pages as well.

Iain.

p.s. As mentioned before if you have any suggestions for the web pages, please mail them
to '[email protected]' the only way we can make it easier for you to obtain
     information is from your feedback.

Apparently newer versions of Alladin Ghostscript will output pdf from a ps
file. Anyone willing to try it?

Iain,

This is incredible. I don't think I have ever seen responsiveness like this.
Kudos!

    re 158.14

I have been using Ghostscript (GhostView) V2.1 (Nov-96), it seems
to be latest and there are no PS to PDF converter that I could find.

There is PS to EPS, or PS to text, but no PS to PDF.

Since our files are more and more available in PDF, I do not
    use GhostView very often anymore.

Also there is a "new" tool in the sales workbench to get PS
files printed called PrintFile (V1.0), see the WB web site to
get it. One more point to drop GhostView all together.

If needed, the web site for it is:
    http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/index.html

Here's another way to print files on a Windows machine...

	copy postscript.ps lpt1
	copy postscript.ps \\server\print_service

PDF is in ghostscript all right:

http://www.gnu.ai.mit.edu/bulletins/current-bull.html

 * Ghostscript

Ghostscript is an interpreter for the Postscript and PDF graphics
     languages.

The current version of GNU Ghostscript is 3.33. This version
includes nearly a full Postscript Level 2 interpreter and also a
PDF 1.0 interpreter. Significant new features include: support
for anti-aliased characters; the ability to scan a directory and
register all the fonts in it; support for Type 0 (Japanese /
Chinese / Korean) fonts; and the ability to compile all the
external initialization files into the executable. This version
can also run as a 32-bit MS Windows application.

158.18Can be done... even under FX!32afirm1.ayo.dec.com::GordonGordon McNabTue Feb 25 1997 09:1812
Ghostscript 4.03 + GSView 2.1 can do pdf output.

You do it in exactly the same way as you would to put postscript to, say, a
deskjet printer. Go Print... then choose the 'pdfwrite' plugin and 'save to
file'. Select the output filename and wait!

Easy,

Gordon
