I received a PAW 3 CD from CA in the States. When I have installed PAW 3 from this CD it identifies itself as PAW V3.0-1118-786 and appears to install fine. However it never creates a PAW Mail Monitor service. It does create the other 4 services just fine. There are no errors in the PAW installation log. I've had exactly the same "error" on 3 different systems - 2 Alphas and 1 Intel. In all cases it was NT 4 SP1 and SMS 1.2 but no SP1 Anyone else seen this? Without the PAW Mail Monitor running I assume there will be no metering. Tony Parsons, Sydney OMS

There was a problem with the PAW mail monitor in the 3.0 not released by us... maybe they have just disabled/removed it? (At least the Proxy Domain Server had problems when the mail monitor was running).

Hi Tony, Yes, I got the CD, and with problems I noted in a previous note, I also saw that the System Mail service was not present after installs. Please see the release notes, they say that for performance reasons that this service is now not auto-installed... contact Digital or C.A. for it if required. I have a number of calls open with C.A., one of which is to definately clarify that if I want metering, then I need the System Mail service, and hence if so, give it to me.... I am still awaiting a response. I will try to catch them today and reply back to you. I also have a call logged with them over installing SMS 1.2 sp1 and doing a PAW ReRegister on Alpha platforms.... causes problems.... and need to do a PAW Upgrade after. Might be best not doing the PAW ReRegister step... A collegue of mine has also logged a call with C.A. because Digital UNIX PATHWORKS Servers don't work with SMS/PAW. 1) SMS does not detect a correct network type for the logon server, workaround = we have to force a change in Domain.ini on the PATHWORKS server to set the network type = 4 and stop SMS changing it. 2) For package distribution, when SMS creates a new directory for a package on the PATHWORKS Server it fails setting permissions on that directory and dies. We have no workaround/fix as yet. Regards, Richard
951.3 | System Mail now a thread of Service Controller | ESSB::RJOYCE | Mon Mar 03 1997 10:32 | 9
Hi, Been off-site for a while. The word back from C.A. is that the system mail component is there all the time.... It is now a tread of the PAW Service Controller. The Release Notes are a bit off... Have fun, Richard

that means PAW metering _will_ work :-) The hardcopy docs need updating as they still say the "old" PAW Mail Monitor service should be around. Thanks for the update. Tony.
