949.0. "SMS unattended installs" by 9113::ABBOTT () Wed Feb 12 1997 15:47

    I am working with a customer who wants to use SMS for unattended
    installs on WindowsNT Workstations systems. They have downloaded and
    are using the PCM service. The dilemma they are facing is that none
    of the third party software they want to install have unattended
    setup options. They would like to know:

    1.) Are there any ways to workaround this dilemma, or are they stuck
    with the fact that without third party support they can't do
    unattended installs and

    2.) Does anyone have experience with a large customer environment and
    how have they worked around this issue (could they perhaps use them
    as a reference site).

    Thanks for any inputs

    I don't have many answers,but a question: have you actually gor the PCM
    service to run? I haven't... the PCM application works fine, and I now
    have the service running on a machine, but nothing happens.

    Maybe you can use MS-Test scripts to install in background?

949.2Customer says it works 9113::ABBOTTThu Feb 13 1997 12:479
    I haven't been doing the hands on, I know the customer had some
    problems getting the PCM service to run. My understanding was that
    they were having problems with the normal PCM grabbing the
    packages rather than the service, but they say they have that
    resolved. Now they get an error status as would be expected if the
    setup routine tries to popup a window from a background service (at
    least I'm assuming that is the problem).

    Well, I got mine working too...

    There's a new version of the normal PCM in the same package with the
    service version. You either have to make sure the old one isn't
    running, or use the new one - otherwise, the service won't get any
    packages.
