PUBLIC LAW 97-280 -- OCTOBER 4, 1982 Joint Resolution Authorizing and Requesting the President to Proclaim 1983 as the "Year of the Bible". "Whereas the Bible, the Word of God, has made a unique contribution in shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation and people; Wheras deeply held religious convictions springing from the Holy Scriptures led to the early settlement of our Nation; Whereas Biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States; Whereas many of our great national leaders -- among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, and Wilson -- paid tribute to the surpassing influence of the Bible in our country's development, as in the words of President Jackson that the Bible is "the rock on which our Republic rests"; Whereas the history of our Nation clearly illustrates the value of voluntarily applying the teachings of the Scriptures in the lives of individuals, families, and societies; Whereas this Nation now faces great challenges that will test this Nation as it has never been tested before; and Whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scripture can strengthen us as a nation and a people: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the President is authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a national "Year of the Bible" in recognition of both the formative influence the Bible has been for our Nation, and our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures." Approved October 4, 1982

Well you will notice that the media sure did not make a big deal about the year of the Bible. I do not recall that taking place!

You know, everyone expects the media to make a big deal about <insert cause>. And when there is an event for a certain day, they groups usually get calling to get some news crews out there. But when there is a whole year deticated to something, they still expect the media to go crazy over it. A whole year event makes no sense to make a big deal of it. Gee, should it be like the OJ trial or something? Did any of the Christian stations make a big deal about it for the whole year? Glen

I doubt there was much mention of it..I was an active Christian back then (before my backslidden days) and I don't recall reading about it anywhere. Jim

...and to the bset of my knowledge there were no Chrisitan radio stations in the area in which I lived in 1983, and I did not have cable, so I don't know how much exposure it got in the Christian media. JIm

Watch again this year to see what gets reported about the "March for Jesus" It is a world-wide event, with millions of people participating in hundreds of countries. The past two years, the Boston Globe has not reported *ONE SINGLE WORD* about the event. I noticed this particularly two years ago. There was another march going on the same weekend, for a cause that the media favors. It was a small march in NY City, with a few thousand people participating. There were front-page preparatory stories on both Friday and Saturday, with a full-page Page 2 story on Saturday explaining the event. On Sunday, there was another front page headline story with a color photo. On the same day, about the same number of people marched in Boston alone, not to mention the millions of other people around the globe. The Boston mayor gave a speech kicking off the march. Yet as far as the Boston Globe was concerned, the event did not exist. There was not a single word about it on the those three days - not even a tiny sidebar on page 47, the kind they reserve for the "Duck run over by truck" stories. I searched the papers diligently for some mention anywhere, but there was none. So I'm not at all surprised that we never heard of the year of the Bible. Paul P.S. The March for Jesus is May 25 this year. See if your paper notices. |
