843.0. "Collection at a DEC site, need info!" by USAT05::GEORGEO () Tue Jan 09 1996 11:07

    Greetings,

    Has anyone sponsored a collection at a Digital facility for the
    homeless? I feel an urging to sponsor a coat collection for the poor
    and homeless in downtown Atlanta. I am affiliated with a church which
    is right in the middle of a very poor housing project (along with many
    homeless) and which could easily pass out the coats for both adults and
    children.

    I need to know if anyone has done this before at a DEC site, to find
    out:
    	- Will facilities allow me to do this?
    	- If so, what do I need to provide to them?
    	- Any tips on what you did in your collection and anything that
    	  you learned that you would do differently.

    Any info would be greatly appreciated!

    In Him,

    Faye

    Faye,

    I don't have a lot of info but wanted to let you know that our
    team here at the CSC did a similar thing during Christmas. It
    was allowed. We had a giving tree that we filled with mittens,
    gloves, scarves and boots and gave the to the Salvation Army and
    Homeless Shelter. So it seems that facilities should let you do
    it.

    I was not involved in the planning though so I can't relly
    help you with your other questions.

    God Bless,
    Pam

You may do it at lunch and during breaks, and you do not need permission.

You may not do it at any other time.

See the Orangebook policy on solicitation; it's very clear and fair about
what is allowed and not allowed.

843.3So basically it's a go?USAT05::GEORGEOTue Jan 09 1996 11:407
    I'm a little unclear to this note.

    I was hoping to send a memo out via the ALL-IN-1 mgr. and put up
    posters in the break rooms, where people could drop off items in my
    cubicle on their breaks. Is that what you mean?

    Faye,

    That's my middle name!!! :-) Speak to your H.R. or facilities manager
    and get their permission prior to doing anything. Once they give you
    the okay, then you are on solid ground. It's the courteous, respectful
    thing to do.

843.5It's a GO!!!USAT05::GEORGEOTue Jan 09 1996 12:2713
    Thanks for everyone's input! I did talk to Facilities and they have
    given me the green light to do the coat drive! They said that all I
    needed was to write up a hard copy and take it to the mailroom and
    they would distribute it to everyone. They also said I could put
    posters in the break rooms, which I am going to do.

    (She also said she would go over the memo for me, to make sure I had
    everything I needed, which I thought was pretty nice!)

    For anyone in ALF, when you see the posters, please talk it up in your
    groups!

    Thanks!  Faye

    It only takes one light to brighten a room!
843.7let's ask NORTEL to join in!ALFSS1::LANGDONEducation Cuts Never HealTue Jan 09 1996 16:256
    Faye,
     Why not ask facilities to let you talk to our co-tenants (NORTEL),,
    maybe we can make it a 'challenge' deal...we could put barrels in
    the caf and see how fast they get filled.....
                                                    Doug
