| I don't have any information on it either in any of my references on
cults. However, there are a few guidelines commonly used to identify a
cult:
1. Attributes of God - usually humanize God
2. Person of Christ - usually strip His deity
3. Nature of Man - usually deify man
4. Requirements of Atonement - usually minimize sin
5. Source of Revelation - usually ostracize the Scriptures

Nancy,
By way of introduction, I read CHRISTIAN because I am interested in ALL
religious perspectives. I do not write in the file becasue I am NOT a
bible-believing Christian.
I've got some perspective on this topic however; one of my housemates
is a Reiki Master.
Reiki is a healing/massage technique that combines therapeutic massage
with working with the body's natural electromagnetic energy fields,
much like acupuncture/acupressure.
It is NOT a religion, any more than acupuncture, chiropractic care, or
podiatry is a religion; There are no particular religious beliefs
associated with it. I am certain that there are Reiki practioners of all
religions.
The title Reiki Master is a *degree* not an indication of priesthood or
any other such thing. It is more akin to an MBA than to a priesthood.
Please feel free to post this information if you wish; hope it clears
up some misconceptions. Thanks.

| Still knowing nothing about Reiki:
That they say they are 'non-religious' doesn't necessarily mean they aren't.
They may very well not be - chiropractic is a good example. So I'm not
suggesting that this be written off just because I don't understand it.
But then again some groups which claim to be 'non-religious,' such as
Transcendental Meditation, ARE inherently religious. So I'd still be wary
until I learned more.

=========================================================================
By Way of Introduction:
Rei*Ki (Ray*Key), quite simply, is Life Energy of the Uni*Verse
(One*Verse). It is that energy which Acts and Lives within the Matrix
of all created matter. The word ReiKi consists of two parts. The
syllable Rei describes the universal, boundless aspect of this energy
while Ki is in itself part of Rei, being the vital life force energy
which flows through all living beings.
ReiKi reaches all levels of existence and operates to bring these
levels into a state of natural balance. Reiki can help us find our way
back to a state of Health, Wholeness, and Being. Consider ReiKi as an
unbiased Healing method, in the broadest sense.
ReiKi interacts through the Source of Life to heal the self and others
on spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. ReiKi allows the
Source of well-being to enhance and balance natural life forces through
non-intrusive therapeutic touch. Health maintenance, pain relief,
mental quietude and healing result from its application
ReiKi is bound by no religion, ritual, or form. Faith or belief is not
required. It is used by people of many different faiths, religions,
philosophies and ideologies with the same success.
The innate ability to channel ReiKi energy through the hands is
awakened through a series of direct transmission initiations which
attune and align energy centers in the body and hands. Anyone can learn
ReiKi. The process is very simple and straight forward. The purpose of
the initiation (attunement) process is to align your personal energy
matrix with the natural flow of ReiKi energy. Once received, ReiKi is
yours for life, nobody can take it away from you.
In healing practices, ReiKi is administered by simply laying the hands
gently on various parts of the body. The Recipient stays fully clothed
and passive, often experiencing a feeling of warmth/coolness and
well-being wherever the hands are placed. Everyone experiences Reiki
differently. The Giver is simply a channel (instrument) for this
energy. It is not one's own limited energy which passes through as the
hands are placed on the person. Hence, the Giver is not depleted in the
process.
The only way to really know ReiKi it is to experience it, to feel it.

Where did ReiKi originate, and what is its history?
The Healing tradition known as Reiki is very ancient, transcending recorded
history, probably through Tibetan lineage. All ancient social cultures have
a tradition of healing esentially common with what is today called Reiki.
The modern system of natural healing we call Reiki is a "recovered" system
and brought forward in the late 1800's. It is formally known as the Usui
System of Natural Healing.
The Usui System of Natural Healing was named after a Japanese theologian
named Mikao Usui who lived in Japan at the end of the last century. Mikao
Usui spent most of his life traveling and studying forgotten secrets of
hands on healing. He understood that Jesus and Buddha had both healed the
sick and he conducted an intensive search of ancient scriptures and
practices in trying to understand the techniques.
While Mikao Usui was studying in a Buddist monastery he came across some
ancient sutras or teachings that held the secret of natural healing. He did
not understand them so he embarked on a 21 day meditation and fast where the
secrets energetic healing were revealed to him by Universal Life Forces. In
addition, he was initiated into the energetic healing system known today as
Reiki with the further ability to transfer this energy to others.
Before Mikao Usui passed, he transfered all that he knew of Reiki to a
retired Japanese Navel Officer named Chujiro Hayashi. Chujiro Hayashi
practiced Reiki in Japan until just before the WWII. Before he passed he
taught a Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata all that he knew of
Reiki. She brought it to the West, with Chujiro Hayashi's blessings. Before
she passed in 1980, she inititated 22 Reiki Masters. These 22 masters have
spread Reiki throughout the world. Today, Reiki is quite literally "in the
hands" of millions of people of all cultures, faiths, and traditons.

|
How is ReiKi different from other methods of healing?
The fundamental difference between Reiki and other forms of energetic
healing is that Reiki heals without bias, diagnosis, or prejudice. The
process is simple, easy to learn, is a permanent ability, and carries
no harmful side effects. In addition, Reiki is complimentary with all
forms of traditional and alternative healing methods and techniques.
Once aligned (attuned) to the Reiki energy channel, access to healing
energy is never any farther away than the palms of your hands. Laying
one or both hands upon anybody, or anything, provokes immediate
movement of energy through you and into that which your hands touch.
The energy does not come from within you, hence you are not depleted in
the process of applying the energy. In fact, the energy moves through
you from a universal source with the net affect being one of healing
both giver and recipient at the same time.
Reiki is an intelligent and self directing healing energy. You do not
diagnose, thus you violate no legal or trust issues during the healing
process. Reiki "knows" and then it "flows"

842.12 | What are some of the effects of ReiKi? | BBQ::WOODWARDC | ...but words can break my heart | Mon Jan 08 1996 21:15 | 41 |
|
What are some of the effects of ReiKi?
The effects of ReiKi are energetic in nature. As an energetic form of
healing, ReiKi operates at a vibratory level commonly referred to as
the "astral" or "etheric". The feelings or perceptions of such energy
is often subjective and will generate a "personal perceived effect" to
the giver and the receiver. It is common for such effects to be felt
physically, emotionally, and mentally, in combination, or in singular
form.
Physical sensation is often one of warmth, sometimes extremely so.
Sometimes perceived effect will be one of coolness. Generally there is
always a soothing effect regardless of the actual thermal sensation.
Emotional sensation is generally one of relaxed calmness and sense of
well being. For me, it is an effect of being gently held in the hands
of someone tender, as if you were a little bird in the hands of a
gentle child. It is a nurturing sensation, unique in the world of
energetic healing methods.
During receipt of ReiKi healing energies, it is the mind which is
perhaps most profoundly aware of it's effects. As the energy courses
through your body, the mind will become aware of the movement and
effects, even at very subtle levels. The intuitive processes "click on"
and ones very being is brought into quiet attentiveness. A "connection
of being" is the most profound effect.
Combine the perceived effects of body, mind, emotion, and the integral
result is a truly balanced healing at all levels. Transformative
Healing becomes normal and "effective".
The dynamics of "effective healing" becomes a continuing process of
"being", a process for which the conscious unbiased energy, known as
ReiKi, exists to serve.
Cherish the effects which you feel, for they are there for you, they
are a part of you.

842.14 | What is a ReiKi attunement and what is it's purpose? | BBQ::WOODWARDC | ...but words can break my heart | Mon Jan 08 1996 21:18 | 22 |
|
What is a ReiKi attunement and what is it's purpose?
The method, or protocol, for passing ReiKi from teacher to student is
known commonly as the "attunement process". For Level 1 ReiKi, there
are commonly 4 attunements to complete the process. For Level 2 ReiKi,
there is commonly 1 attunement to complete the process, although many
teachers apply 2 or 3 attunements (known as progressives).
An attunement is actually a process of energy alignment. Alignment is
the sequence process where your personal energy field is brought into
resonance with the vibrational energy pattern known as ReiKi. This is
the sole purpose of ReiKi attunements.
On a more traditional note, the attunement process is a sacred ritual
from teacher to student. While the teacher conveys knowledge of ReiKi
in traditional teaching style, the actual conveyance of energy
activation is always through the attunement process. This is how you
receive ReiKi for life. Once activated, it can never be taken away from
you.

| Ok,
you've now read what the Reiki's say about themselves.
From the repeated use of 'sacred', and 'universal energy', and 'healing
energy', and 'channel' and other such phrases - what are we to think?
This information is NOT from a Christian organisation, it is from the
World Wide Web site calling itself "The USUI Home Page [ Tradtional
Reiki ]" (spelling error _theirs_).
If it is not a 'New Age religion', then it is something very closely
akin to a religion, and should be avoided.
God Bless,
Harry
