793.0. "Source of low cost bibles?" by IOSG::DIMON () Tue Sep 05 1995 05:11

Does anyone know of a source of low cost *hard backed* reasonable sized
bibles? The cheapest the person looking into this at my church
(Alverstoke Evangelical Church in Gosport, Hants.) has found is just
    over 7 pounds.

A bit of background on this...

My Fiance and I take a class in our Church's Sunday school (called
J-Club), each week the children are given points for attendance,
bringing their bible, wearing their badge, remembering memory verses
etc... When they have enough points they are given a prize.

Up until now we have always presented them with an attractive hard backed
bible when they reach 250 points, however, these have become too expensive
to buy now. We have paper backed bibles which we lend the children
until they have enough points to be presented with their own, our only
option now is to present these are prizes. Doing this however means
that the children don't really get a *special* prize, as their new
bibles are no different to their old bibles. Apparently the paper
backed bibles cost less than 3 pounds. (Anyone know why there is such a
    difference in price?)

The bibles that we buy for the children must be of a reasonable size,
so that they can read the print easily (i.e. normal sized, rather than
    pocket sized).

Has anyone ever looked into this? or know of any sources?

We are able to buy at trade (I believe the above prices are probably
trade prices, as they are what we pay at the moment), so if you know of
any bibles just over or around the 7 pounds marks in the shops, we
could probably get them for less.

We like to give the children the hard backed version, so that it is
something special that they will keep for the rest of their lives.

    God Bless
      Steve

Re: .0

Have you tried the International Bible Society, or the American Bible Society?

I don't have a catalog for the ABS, but I've got an old one for the IBS that
advertizes a hardback NIV for $3.45 each, $2.95 for a case of 24.

The IBS bibles are partially subsidized through a special grant and may only
be distributed for evangelism. You agree not to resell them.

The least expensive source of Bibles and other Scripture materials that
I've ever found is the American Bible Society.

"ABS sells its Scriptures at cost - without profit, to encourage the widest
possible distribution and fulfill the mission givenit by the churches it
    serves."

Most complete Bibles (paperbound) are priced about $3.00 each; for
hardcover, about $6.00 each. New Testaments can be purchased for as little
as 75 cents; the individual gospels, 50 cents. Some of the community of
readers here have received a copy of Luke which I ordered and gave away some
time back.

ABS publishes materials in the following translations:

		Contemporary English Version
		Today's English Version
		King James Version
		New American Standard Version
		New Jerusalem Bible
		New King James Version
		Revised Standard Version
		New Revised Standard Version

Many of these are available in large print and on audio cassette tapes.

A catalogue may be requested by writing:

		American Bible Society
		PO Box 5656
		Grand Central Station, NY 10164-0851

I receive no compensation or benefit from this organization.

Peace,
Richard

793.3Maybe the Gideons?STOWOA::MOISANTue Oct 31 1995 11:3411
Years ago when I worked at a Mass. Correctional Institution, I was able
to obtain free Bibles from the Gideon Society for the residents who
were institutionalized there and at another local pre-release center.
(PTL, I believe this has continued since I left over 15 years ago).

You might want to try them as they are an international organization
and they might be willing to provide them to you at their cost. Won't
    hurt to ask.

Steve Dimon (author of .0) was an I.T. here in Reading. He finished his
spell recently, and bid us farewell in note 799.

Just to update why he's not replying here any more!
