If you could had to pick a single book of the bible to
study, what would it be ? (not that you wouldn't get a
chance to study the others later, but if you had to pick one
to start with)
We're going on vacation next week, and I am thinking of picking up
a study guide. I figure we'll get through one book in the week,
but I can't decide what book to study.
What's your personal favorite ?

| Karen, regarding a book to pick. It depends a lot on what you're looking for.
John is a great gospel to read. More than any other it portrays Jesus as God
Himself.
Romans is probably the most complete theological presentation.
Isaiah is great, there's so much stuff in there, though there's a fair amount
of repetition to wade through.
Acts is a wonderful study of what our Christian lives are meant to be like.
Deuteronomy lays out better than perhaps any other book our right
relationship to God.
Hebrews presents the sufficiency of Christ in all ways.
The four short letters following Corinthians: Galatians, Ephesians,
Phillipians, Collosians, is probably about the most compact section of the
Bible. There is SO MUCH stuff in those four little letters.
I could go on, but you only wanted one..... :-)

I love Acts. Being a history buff I love reading about the founding
of the church, Paul's missionary journeys, the power of the Holy
Spirit as men who just a few days before were dejected after the
death of their Lord, witnessed him alive and empowered by the Holy
Spirit began to evangelize the world. There is much for today's
church to learn from Acts. The name Christian was first used in
Acts and we can see where the name came from and who the first Christians
were and what they believed.
Then, I love John, particularly chapters 14-17

| Hi,
Why dont you get a book that will build you up in faith.
Like a book from Keneth Haggin, hes got a book called growing up
spiritually which I have read and it is great.
There are others from Keneth Haggin Junior or even Ray Macauly And
other Great men of God.
Try reading one of these books and follow in your bible just to make
sure that you are not led astray by the book you choose.
God Bless You and may you grow.
Jesus Said " My People perish for a lack of knowledge."
Regards

on chs. 14-17. Awesome!
For a little book, 1 John is wonderful.

I'd rather stick with God's Word than someone who steals their doctrine
from metaphysicalists like EW Kenyon.

| I know Revelation the best, but for just the enjoyment of reading a
book I might lean toward First John. It's short enough that you could
read it in its entirety at a sitting, so you could read it through
every day while on vacation. It wasn't until I actually studied First
John that I became convinced re eternal security.

Thanks for the input!
I thought of 1 John, too, but then felt it might be too short.
I've done ACTS and a little bit of Hebrews, but there is
so much in Hebrews that can be studied!
I'll probably select a specific study on either Romans or John.
Jamie's looking forward to this, too!
We'll also be bringing along a book about marriage and reading
that together each night.

| Ruth. Not for any theological reason, but because it is
the "patron book" of our marriage. The "wherever you go"
passage was woven throughout our wedding -- the popular
song of that theme was sung at our wedding, and we incorporated
that text into our vows. "Wherever you go" was inscripted
on our wedding cake, and I did the artwork on the cover of
the booklet we had made for the wedding that contained the
songs and readings. On the cover were two doves soaring
together between the words "wherever you go".

| With Karen on vacation already, my vote is too late, but I can't resist
anyway, because I'm just too hooked on those potato chips (was it?) ;-)
Isaiah.
It has the richness of the Old Testament, the gleam of the gospel,
the wonder of the millenium. If there were no other book at all, I
could feed on that one for a lifetime.
Sure, it goes for the rest of them too, to a different degree, but Isaiah
just blows me away (and at my weight, that's no mean feat!). The first
half has a lot of negative in it, but this only serves to emphasise the
highlights (1:18-19, 12:2-3, 25:6-9, 26:3,8,12, 30:20-21, 32:15,17, 33:17
and after about chapter 42, the revelation goes hyper.
But then, I doubt I'd choose it to go through on vacation. At least, not
in detail, unless it was more 'retirement' than 'vacation'. 1 John would
be more practical. Or Romans 8 (the chapter would be enough, and its a
great encourager for a vacation).
And then, all the basic doctrines are worked out in Genesis, with the
practical outworking in people's lives.
Argh! Those potato chips! Any danger of putting on a gospel belly?

My faves are Deuteronomy (there are some wonderful encouragements
there), Haggai ('cos it's challenging) and one of the gospels ('cos
they talk about Jesus). To pick just one is really hard so I'll close
my eyes and whichever one I type is the winner:-

I spent some time reading John 14 last night..I read it to myself, then aloud
and received such a blessing from it. It is amazing how so many times we
can read something we've read many times before in the Word, and grasp some-
thing new from it..
"The Word of God is living and active..."

And the winner is....
ROMANS !
We got as far as the first chapter of the study guide. There's
something like 30 questions in just the first chapter, and many of
them are *not* short answer essays ;-) Also, several of the
questions got us into long discussions that tended to stray beyond
the discussion of Romans 1:1-1:17, but were fruitful nonetheless.
It was a good start - we'll need to set up a time to continue with
it at home.
Karen
PS - we also picked up a "Bible crossword" book for $1.99 that
we brought along and worked on together. I won't tell you all

I would think not indeed! I don't know which would be worse; the
embarrassment it would heap on Jamie, or the pride it would engender in
you! Karen, I commend you on your admirable restraint on not telling us!
I wouldn't tell you I beat Ros, either, partly because it wouldn't be true...

I have not done an intensive study of Romans yet but with
