602.0. "Intro To Apologetics?" by POBOX::FOILES (Jesus Christ -- Semper Fidelas) Tue Oct 04 1994 17:15

We have two families in our church that are being influenced by Oneness
Pentecostal theology. I have been asked to find some material that will
help the church withstand this, and other, heretical teaching. I am
hoping to find something like an "Introduction to Apologetics" that is
    interesting and informative.

Is anyone out there familar with material that would address such
    needs?

    Thanks and God Bless!

    What is "Oneness Pentecostal" theology?

A semi-decent introduction to the work of apologists is _Kingdom of the
Cults_ by Dr. Walter Martin. Hank Hannegraf (sp?) now heads up the
Christian Research Institute but I've only read his _Christianity In
Crisis_ book and can't comment on much more than that.

A number of good books are written on both apologetics and systematic
theology. I'll get some titles and post in here tomorrow. I do know
of one book that specifically addresses the Oneness doctrine.

    Steve,

I'm not sure if your question was rhetorical or not but Oneness is
sometimes known as "Jesus only". Regarding Oneness Pentecostalism,
around the early 1910s to 1920s the Pentecostal Movement split over
this doctrine. It finds it's greatest prominence in the area of
baptism. Oneness Pentecostals believe that the only proper way to
baptize is in Jesus name 'only', not in the name of the Father, and in
the name of the Son, and in the name of the Holy Spirit. To be more
accurate they believe that all three are embodied in Jesus. In other
words the Father is Jesus, the Son is Jesus and the Holy Spirit is
Jesus. If you want I can get more in depth information from home and
    post it?

Thanks, Kent. I'd heard of the "Jesus Only" doctrine - but I hadn't
heard it referred to as "Oneness".

Sure - post whatever you've got (as time permits). Like the basenoter,
I too would be interested in your list of references for apologetics
    and theology!

I'll not be able to post the list today. Too many meetings - not
enough day. My humble apologies. I'll try for tomorrow.

    Kent,

Is this an intro to apologetics example?

Sorry, it just struck me as funny.

The United Pentecostal Church (UPC) is Jesus-only. They also believe
you must speak in tongues to be saved.

    re -1

    It's a reverse logic.

In order to speak in tongues you must have received the baptism in the
    Holy Spirit.

In order to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit you must be born
    again.

Therefore the evidence of salvation is speaking in tongues.

Sounds simple enough to me :-)

602.8POBOX::FOILESJesus Christ -- Semper FidelasWed Oct 05 1994 14:5230
I was (past tense) a devoted member of the United Pentecostal Church
for over 13 years and a graduate of a UPC Bible College. Leaving the
UPC was a very traumatic experience. It really grieves me to see these
families being drawn into this deviant organization.

The United Pentecostal Church is the largest organization of the
Oneness Pentecostals or Jesus Only. I believe they are also the most
legalistic and authoritarian. The tenants of the faith are:

    		- Repentance
    		- The absolute necessity of baptism in Jesus name for the
remission of sins. (any other baptism is considered invalid)
    		- The baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of
speaking in other tongues is considered a necessity, not a gift.
    		- To retain salvation, members must lead a life of holiness
as set forth in the organizations statement of faith.

The pastor and I fear that a direct exposition of the Oneness heresy
may polarize these families and drive them away. (The UPC will tell
these people to expect resistance from those who do not have "The
Truth".) We would like to present essential Christians truths to the
entire congregation in a format that will hold their interest.

I gotta run. Thanks for all the responses.

Any information, or experiences, concerning the UPC or Oneness Pentecostal
    movement is welcome.

    God Bless

    Hi Neil,

I remember intimately that time in your life when trying to pull away
from this organization. I've thought of you often and wondered how
    your family is doing.

It sounds as though you are thriving well and this warms the heart.

    God Bless,
    Nancy

    P.S.
Spoke to Daryl Gleason this past weekend! He's doing well.

The problem with this logic is that it assumes "Baptism in the Holy
    Spirit" = "Speaking in Tongues"

    Pam,

The first rule of apologetics is to never apologize (Romans 1:16-17)
    :-)

I would recommend a book titled "Oneness Pentecostals and the Trinity",
by Gregory A. Boyd. I found it at Family Bookstores for $12. Mr. Boyd
is a contributor to the Christian Research Journal which (someone
correct this if I am wrong) is a publication of the Christian Research
    Institute.

Longer list to follow but I gotta run too.

    Mike,

Not necessarily. It only means that you can't speak in tongues without
the baptism in the Holy Spirit. But I agree the logic is flawed.

Boy, I'm in here a lot more than I planned today.

Finally! Some information on the UPC. I was in southern Louisiana last
year for a couple of months and saw these churches everywhere. I had
no idea what they were (well, I could guess they were Pentecostal) and
had never heard of such a denomination. It's nice to get a bit more
information. I'm simply a curious person.

    Nancy,

Christian Greetings!! Its good to here from you as well! I have often
wondered how you were faring the rough waters at Digital. My wife
recently told a friend that she would never return to the UPC. Only God
can cause such a dramatic change of heart.

    Jeff,

The UPC is very strong in Louisiana and Texas. I would also highly
recommend Gregory Boyd's book "Oneness Pentecostals and the Trinity".
He to was a Oneness Pentecostal but now is a professor at Bethel
    Seminary in St. Paul MN.
If you call the Christian Research Institute and request information on
Oneness Pentecostalism, they will send you some excellent information
    free of charge.
