Please add to the appropriate note. I am searching for information regarding "God Parents". Such as: Role, Responsibility, etc. I am planning on getting the boys "Blessed" as they do in the Baptist Churches. And these are some of the questions that came up in conversation. Thanks, Leslie

Historically the Godparents are the ones who agree to care for the child if something should happen to the parents.

Unfortunately in this society all too often the role of Godparent is nothing more than ceremonial.

There was a discussion of this somewhere else recently. I think it was in the Parenting notes file. Sponsers or "God-parents" at a child's baptism or dedication promise to pray for the child, and contribute to the child's education about who God is. They can be thought of as theological mentors. Unfortunately, it does tend to be a formality or ceremonial thing. In the U.S. at least, they have no legal responsibility for or authority over the child in the event of the parents' inability to care for or raise the child unless they are named guardians through some legal method like the courts.
