Not to exclude everyone else, but it would be a long lunch for some, if you were to attend.... I've been thinking (it hurts, but I have, really), what would be the possibility of we Colorado Christians getting together for a lunchbox fellowship, some day around noon (usually when lunch is).. I throw the idea at Pam who would be interested as long as the day and time were announced far enough in advance... What say the rest of you Coloradians.? Would this be something you'd be willing to attempt, or are schedules so different that this type of event would be nearly impossible....? I am writing a new topic so we can enter other Colorado Christian related stuff... Again, not to exclude other noters, but Colorado is a bit far for some of you to travel... Yours in Christ, Bob G.

Hey guys, this is TREMENDOUS! Although I'm k's of miles away, it cheers my heart to think of you folks getting together, sharing fellowship with the LORD, deepening foundations already laid.... .... and taking a phototgraph ;-) Seriously, I think it would be good to record any sort of get-together like this, ready for a potential CHRISTIAN noters photograph album mark II. I submitted the Little Chef Reading / Basingstoke team to this sort of humiliation last Friday, though I didn't have the nerve to insist on more than a couple of quick snaps outside. Nor the flash to record them 'at table'. But it was with the intent that we could share the occasion as widely as possible. Be warned, anyone who has a vestige of curiosity as to what this Little Chef is really like, the evidence is likely to be preserved (if I've really got a film loaded this time ;-). Andrew

Leaving us the above dates. How about if we pick 9 September as the date. If we miss that one, we can make a backup of 23 September. Now, where to meet. Folks that are on phones will have a tough time coordinating enough time to get to CXO1/2, so why not meet on the CXO3 patio/veranda. My time is flexible for lunch, from 11:00 to 13:00 ish. So, y'all that are on tighter schedules, please pick your time and let the rest of us know.

537.20 | Steeling the Mind of America | CUJO::SAMPSON | Mon Aug 29 1994 12:29 | 105
Hello, everyone. I had the opportunity to attend all day Sat. at a conference called "Steeling the Mind of America" in Vail, CO. Dave, a Christian at work, heard on KHNC (USA Patriot Network) that they were offering tickets to the one day for only $15 each. So I checked with my better half, and she said I could go! She cautioned me to be frugal at the book tables, though. Dave drove to the station in Johnstown, CO to get the tickets. I must have been kind of excited about going, because I didn't get to sleep until 1:30 AM. Then I had to get up at 5:30 AM! The first speaker was Don McAlvany ("The New World Order: How Close Are We?" and "America at the Crossroads: Freedom or Slavery"), who spent almost 4 hours breezing rapidly through an overview of the political, economic, and military situation in the USA and the rest of the world. Owing to lack of sleep, my mind went blank briefly a couple of times, but it seemed that I was already aware of most of the information, because I don't rely on the tee-vee news and local papers as my only news sources. His theme was that the "New World Order" is poised to take over the USA, and that Russia has big plans in place to exploit the power grab. He drew parallels between the USA and the Northern Kingdom (Israel), shortly before it ceased to exist. He showed some photos of Russian and UN military vehicles (including chemical and biological decontamination units) being transported and stored within the USA, among others. We had sack lunches just outside the Dobson ice arena (no ice), where the conference was held. We rode the (free) bus and walked around Vail a little. The afternoon session started with Henry Morris of the Institute for Creation Research in San Diego, CA ("The Long War Against God"). He stressed that the Biblical account of Creation is foundational and absolutely essential to every aspect of the Christian faith. He also covered the bad philosophical and behavioral fruit that has grown out of the tree of belief in evolution. Next was Hal Lindsey ("Russia, Islam, and the Armageddon Scenario"), a well-known author ("Late Great Planet Earth", etc.) and pastor of a church in So. CA. He says that after studying the subject for decades, he is still convinced that Jesus will gather His people to himself just prior to the seven years of the great tribulation. He understands that Christians in many parts of the world are under tremendous persecution, and strongly believes that American Christians will also be subjected to the same kind of persecution between today and the rapture. He also touched on another interesting topic: When Jimmy Carter ordered that the USA would no longer develop or deploy neutron nukes, a lead scientist got upset (I think his name is Sam Cohen), and started working on nukes for Israel. Hal says Israel has perfected micro-nukes, mini-nukes, and tiny-nukes, and specialized battlefield delivery systems for them. These weapons would not be used as a last resort, but would instead be used immediately when Israel is invaded. A mini-nuke might be used as a smart bomb to eliminate the leadership of an invading nation. A tiny nuke might be used as an artillery shell to kill every invading tank crew in a 500-meter radius, which could be done "safely" from a 1500-meter radius or more. This may help to explain how Israel now believes that it can negotiate away so much strategic land (such as the Golan Heights) in exchange for peace. Chuck Missler was the next speaker ("Prophecy Update: Seven Key Areas to Watch"). He outlined seven current events we can watch unfolding before us in the news, and compare with Biblical prophecy. He emphasized that the Bible, although it has about fourty different authors who wrote 66 different books over a span of thousands of years, is an integrated message system that has proved and is proving itself to originate from outside the confines of space and time. We had supper at Denny's, several miles west on the freeway. A cold front came through, blowing dust, rain, and some snowflakes. It continued to rain on and off in the Vail area through the evening. The last speaker of the day was John Ankerberg ("Today's Battle for Tomorrow's Future"). He gave live narrations of several video clips. The theme was that our nation is currently in a battle between incompatible world-views; either the God of the Bible exists, or He does not. There will be a winner and a loser, and God's people will be on the losing side if we don't mobilize quickly to effectively combat the influence of anti-God ideas. He gave an altar call for those who wanted to become Christians (a few dozen raised hands were acknowledged). Then he asked everyone who wanted to make themselves available to God for whatever He wants to do through them, to stand. Just about everyone stood up. He then asked us to ask God for an idea of how He wants each of us to get involved, then to sit down as soon as we received an answer. On Friday evening, we missed Hal Lindsey ("Planet Earth 2000 AD: Will Mankind Survive?") and a video conference ("The Truth Behind Outcome-Based Education"), which I believe was hosted by John Leffler, a local Christian radio talk show host. On Sunday morning, on top of Vail Mountain, we missed John Ankerberg ("Is There an Absolute Truth?"), with a multi-media presentation geared toward a pagan college audience, and Chuck Missler ("Surviving the Nineties"). About 2,000 people attended this year, from about thirty states. It was disappointing to see only a few non-white people in the crowd, but understandable, given the racist image with which all patriot groups have been painted in the media. To be sure, a few fringe groups have earned this image, but not the vast majority of patriots. Also, the full conference prices were a bit steep (they would have kept me away), and the location was a bit out of the way (two hours from Denver, west on I-70). Q: "What is the biggest problem in America: Ignorance or Apathy?" A: "I don't know, and I don't care!" Despite the odds, I *was* frugal at the book tables, and didn't buy *anything*! I even passed up the "Clinton Chronicles" video (from Larry Nichols), on sale for only $15! Of course, it helped that I didn't bring (or have) much cash in the first place. Bob Sampson

They need all the support from the Christian community that they can get. Apparently last week, this band entered the battle of the bands at Rack n' Roll in order to reach the secular audience. They had no thought of actually winning. Now, they are in the semi finals. Also, I heard the Froggymeisters is struggling. Well, we went to Focus yesterday and I'm kicking myself for not going earlier. They had several exhibits and things to do. 1. Our first stop was Wit's End from the ever popular (in our home, at least) Adventures in Odyssey. Enter through an arched brick doorway (or a sewer pipe for the kids) and walk along a brick path between two maple? trees strung with lights. Turn left and open the door to imagination station and prepare to be transported to another land. Exit into Wit's End. Go into Eugene's clubhouse and read some wonderful classic books or lounge on a big, fluffy pillow and watch Odyssey videos. Then, make your way to the Wit's End soda fountain. Have an ice cream or hotdog and chips and either sit on a stool at the fountain our outside on the patio overlooking the mountains. This place was FUN! 2. The bookstore: Wide variety of books are available and not just those published by Focus. Get a FotF bookbag or t-shirt or buy a copy of that FotF broadcast that you missed. They have a play area for kids and lots of books and tapes (video and audio. Not cheap but not any more expensive than other Christian bookstores. 3. G. Harvey Gallery! Displays of the beautiful art of G. Harvey. Nathan wouldn't let me stay too long in here so I'll have to go back by myself. 4. Ministry displays. This is the largest display. It tells of the 52 different ministries of Focus on the Family. It has interactive computer terminals so you can watch them construct a storyboard for Odyssey or the shooting of The Last Chance Detectives. Learn about ministries all over the world. Listen to the taping of the radio broadcast and find out what radio station plays the broadcast and get a print out. Didn't spend a lot of time here either because Nathan was bored. 5. The theater featuring 'Coming Home'. This was an interesting retrospective on the history of Focus. It lasts 20 minutes. All in all, it was an enjoyable couple of hours. If you want to do any serious looking around, don't bring the kids but if you want to have fun, go to Wit's End. Pam

537.49 | Pat seems to think China's forced abortion is okay | CUJO::SAMPSON | Wed Apr 05 1995 22:07 | 33
Equal Rights for Unborn Women This January, Congresswoman Pat Schroeder was a featured speaker at a "reproductive rights" rally honoring Susan B. Anthony, as though she were the patron saint of the pro-choice movement. Unfortunately, Colorado feminists wanting to pay homage to a feminist [pro-abort -rjs] icon have selected the wrong woman. A thorough search of her writings reveals that Susan B. Anthony considered abortion [to be] child murder, as did the American Medical Association in that era. In the last century the AMA publicly called abortionists "monsters" and men of "corrupt souls". They further believed them to be a "blight on society" and a "shame" to the medical profession. Ms. Anthony was no less fervent in her disdain for the heinous practice which ends the lives of innocent human beings. In her own words, abortion was a criminal act. Ms. Anthony did have a tenderness for wives whose husbands were callous in their sexual demands. However, she had an amazing perception of the psychological [soul -rjs] damage that was done to women who were coerced into abortion. Susan B. Anthony bemoaned, "Guilty? Yes, no matter what the motive, love of ease, or a desire to save from suffering the unborn innocent, the woman is awfully guilty who commits the deed. It will burden her conscience in life, it will burden her soul in death, but oh! thrice guilty is he who, for selfish gratification, heedless of her prayers, indifferent to her fate, drives her to the desperation which impels her to the crime." 537.50 | Denver Planned Parenthood | CUJO::SAMPSON | Wed Apr 19 1995 23:37 | 22
The Denver Police have lately (more than usual) taken to eagerly clapping peaceful pro-lifers into handcuffs and hauling them off to jail, supposedly for "disturbing the peace", from the sidewalk in front of "Planned Parenthood" at 20th & Vine. Denver City ordinances state that one must make more noise than a football game, in order to "disturb the peace". Not only do the officers know that the ordinance has not been violated, they also use excessive and unnecessary force and confinement against these people, in situations where a summons to appear in court (a ticket) should be issued instead. Videotape taken at the scene shows Harvey Baines, a mild-mannered Black Minister who recently joined the Promise Keepers' full-time staff, quietly preaching the gospel, then smiling and waving in handcuffs as he is hauled away. On Tuesday, one of the fellow picketers at Mayfair showed me the wounds that had been inflicted on his wrists by the handcuffs and rough treatment he received from the Denver Police at 20th & Vine. Be advised that our nation, in order to protect the "right" to abortion, is finding it necessary to bulldoze away all competing rights.

It's comiming together! Mike McManus, the syndicated columnist who writes "Ethics and Religion" and the author of the book Marriage Savers and whose Community Marriage Policy was highlighted on the December 19 and 20 broadcasts of Focus on the Family, will be coming to Colorado Springs to present his Community Marriage Policy to this city. In short it is a guideline that pastors and ministers agree to citywide to encourage stronger marriages. It is already installed in 28 cities nationwide. Some of the guidelines -- churches will use a "couple inventory" tool such as PREPARE or FOCCUS; couples will be encouraged to attend an Engaged Encounter weekend; couples will be engaged for at least 4 months before marriage; couples will be encouraged to attend a Marriage Encounter weekend after marriage; churches will create a mentorship program where senior married couples mentor newly marrieds for a year; etc., etc. The policy varies from city to city. In city after city where this has been adopted, the rate of divorce has shown a drop. We need this in Colorado Springs, for this area has one of the highest divorce rates in the state, and this state has a higher divorce rate than the national average. We're attempting to bring this here, and today I met with some area church leadership, and there is serious interest in what we're trying to do. Hopefully we can pull together a core of mainline Christian, evangelical Christian, Catholic, and Jewish clergy to formulate the local CMP, and we are shooting for an initial participation of 100 citywide churches when it is presented on February 12, 1996.

Includes a partial transcript from Denver radio talk-show interview with two of the injured pro-life demonstrators. SEE ALSO: FACEResponses NOTES: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MELEE BREAKS OUT AT ABORTION-CLINIC PROTEST By Craig Jones and Lynn Bartels, RMN Staff Writers [PHOTOGRAPH, with caption: Protesters Terry Sullivan, left, and Clifton Powell stand in front of the Denver Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, where Powell was injured during a demonstration Wednesday. Powell received 12 stitches for his injuries. Photographer: Hal Stoelzle] A daily protest outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in Denver turned violent Wednesday [Oct 5, 1994] as abortion foes and employees fought. Each side blamed the other for the 8:35 a.m. melee at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, 2030 E. 20th Ave. Three protesters were injured. A Denver man who witnessed a peaceful demonstration at the clinic as he drove his daughter to school at 8:20 a.m. was stunned by what he saw upon his return. "I was shocked to see ... blood and police," Nick Vigil said. Seven police cars were dispatched to the clinic. Gary Jamieson, associate director of Planned Parenthood of the Rockies, was issued a municipal summons for assault along with several abortion protesters, Denver Police Detective Tracie Harrison said. Further charges could be filed based on the injuries sustained by individuals involved. Members of the Pro-Life Action Network said they came to the clinic to "picket and pray" when Michael Newell, a security guard, attacked them. Newell conceded using his baton but said he was attacked while defending Jamieson from well-known abortion foe Terry Sullivan. [Note: Jamieson is approximately 40; Sullivan is 65.] Planned Parenthood officials refused comment. Police identified the injured as Clifton Dean Powell, 38, and David Allen Lane, 24, both of Westminster, and Diana C. Cordova, 51, of Arvada. Powell and Lane were treated and released from Denver General Hospital, where they required 12 stitches and eight stitches, respectively. Cordova was treated at the scene for a bruised arm]. Sullivan, who organized abortion protests in 1993 when Pope John Paul II came to Denver, said the Pro-Life Action Network has been demonstrating at Planned Parenthood for months. Nine people picketed the clinic Wednesday morning, sticking crosses and placards in the ground. The protesters were getting ready to leave and were removing their signs when Jamieson and Newell came outdoors and started pushing them, Sullivan said. He said Newell repeatedly struck Lane and Powell in the head with his baton, and then hit Cordova. Jamieson knocked Newell down, Sullivan said. Newell had instructed Lane, who was videotaping the protest, to move 8 feet back from the clinic, as required by law, Powell said. When Lane didn't move [fast enough], Newell pushed him, Powell added. Newell recalled the incident differently. "This day was the most aggressive I've seen the protesters in the year-and-a-half I've been here," he said. Each day, he and the director go outside and tell the abortion foes to remove their crosses and signs, Newell said. When they went outside Wednesday, Newell said, Sullivan attacked Jamieson. When he tried to intercede, Newell said he was attacked. Newell didn't know what triggered Wednesday's confrontation, but said in the past four weeks he has sensed "more brazen behavior" among the protesters. [Note: This article contains some inaccuracies; see the radio interview for more accurate information.] -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The following is a transcript of an Oct. 6, 1994 interview by Denver radio talk-show host Steve Kelly with two of the pro-life protesters who were attacked and severely beaten Oct. 5. The attack occurred at the Planned Parenthood abortion mill at 20th and Vine in Denver. [The first few words were cut off due to tape problems.] KELLY: ...The media was all over asking Planned Parenthood what happened, trying to offer some balance in the reporting yesterday. Not that there's ever balance, necessarily, but in an effort to find balance. No, they would not talk about it. And after it hits the front page of the paper, and of course now, you're backpedaling...Let's talk to Bernadette Cordova [one of the protesters]. She has to run, here, I guess. Bernadette, welcome to the show, thanks for coming on. BERNADETTE: [on phone] Hi, thank you for having me. KELLY: Now, you--Gary Jamieson were charged with assault on--you've charged him with assault, correct? BERNADETTE: That is correct. KELLY: He says he has had no contact with you. BERNADETTE: Well, I don't understand how he can say that; of course, I don't understand how they can say any of the things that you just read. [Kelly had just read PP's media release giving their version of the attack.] I am just furious because he was hitting Mr. Sullivan over and over with his fists, and I was very concerned for Mr. Sullivan; he is an elderly man; and so I tried to get in the middle of Mr. Jamieson--which is from Planned Parenthood--and Mr. Sullivan, who is a pro-lifer, and he then began to hit me. As a matter of fact, my back is hurting, and my shoulder is hurting, and I'm not-- KELLY: Bernadette, let me ask you this: I see an old guy getting beat up, a friend of mine whom you've protested with for the last five years, by the way, with no problem like this, I understand. BERNADETTE: That's correct. He is not violent--none of us are violent. KELLY: Well, now, your tactics may, uh, ignite a lot of passion on people who are on both sides of this, but that's beside the point. You have a First Amendment right to do what you can, within the law. BERNADETTE: Exactly, and I don't know where they got this from. First of all, I'd like to clear it up-- KELLY: Let me ask you this real quick, though. If I'm seeing a friend of mine, Mr. Sullivan in this case, who, it is alleged that he grabbed Mr. Jamieson's tie and threw him to the ground-- BERNADETTE: Right, that's not true at all. KELLY: --and if I see Mr. Jamieson beating on Mr. Sullivan, I am picturing me jumping on this guy's back. You didn't do that? You say you tried to get in between them. BERNADETTE: I tried to separate them, and, you know, I didn't jump on his back, I just tried to get in the middle of them, and I was pushing them both away, and then Mr. Jamieson then began hitting me. And it goes to--our physical--the way we are hurt right now goes to show who attacked whom. I mean, I didn't see anybody from Planned Parenthood have to go to the hospital. And two of our protesters, Cliff Powell and Dave Lane, had stitches--Cliff Powell had twelve stitches, and Dave Lane had a concussion and had, I believe it was nine stitches; they were bleeding, I was begging Mr.-- KELLY: Maybe the Planned Parenthood guys are just better fighters? BERNADETTE: Well, I would be a better fighter too if I had a nightstick and I was beating somebody over the head. KELLY: All right, hang on here, because all three protesters were charged with assault-- BERNADETTE: That's incorrect. KELLY: And Mr. Jamieson was charged with assault-- BERNADETTE: No, that's not true. KELLY: All right, let's clarify that right after this, okay? BERNADETTE: Okay. KELLY: And we'll be joined by Clifton Powell, one of the other protesters here. I would invite--let me just do it on the air, out of fairness--Gary Jamieson, we've called and called, to come on and talk about his side of the story. You see, this is so obvious to me, you just send out a press release, try to neutralize this, and hope that it goes away. Well, it ain't going to go away, at least for the next few minutes. It's 3:24 on 85 KOA. [BREAK] KELLY: 3:27, Kelly & Company, Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood yesterday at 20th and Vine, there was an altercation, where a couple of protesters were beaten to the extent they had to be taken to the hospital, and stitches, and so forth. And now, we're talking with two of those protesters that were involved, Bernadette Cordova and Clifton Powell. Let me ask you real quick, Bernadette, before we broke, we talked about this, as close as we could get to Planned Parenthood--and by the way, their publicity person is out today. You'd think the one day that a huge event like this happens, their publicity people would be there. They're conspicuously absent. But anyway-- BERNADETTE: Right, and where were they yesterday? KELLY: Well, it doesn't surprise me. But that's the transparency, you see, and I don't--this is what makes me a little angry, on the pro-life side of the issue. I don't even like calling myself pro-life--I'm anti-abortion rights. But, Bernadette, it says here that all three protesters, that would include you, were charged with assault. BERNADETTE: No, that is not true--only one protestor was charged with assault, and his name was Mr. Sullivan, Mr. Terry Sullivan. But another thing, Mr. Powell and Mr. Lane, David Lane, and Cliff Powell, who were bleeding, as I said before, and had to have stitches, and had a concussion, they were taken to the hospital, put on a hold by the police, cuffed to their beds, and they had shackles on their feet while they were in the hospital. I don't understand that, while Mr. Mike Newell, who attacked us--them with a nightstick, just got to walk away, with nothing, no handcuffs, no anything, nothing like that. KELLY: All right, now, you have charged Mr. Jamieson with assault. BERNADETTE: Yes, I have. KELLY: How far are you going to pursue this? BERNADETTE: Well, um, I want to go as far as I can, all the way, because I feel that justice really needs to be, you know, done here, because we have been charged with so many--they trump up these charges on us, and then we are acquitted all the time, and I just don't see where--understand how many times people have to see that, you know, that we are acquitted, to believe that we're innocent. The Christians are being attacked, and it's obvious. KELLY: What about--I see people out there right now say, well, you're a Christian, what about turning the other cheek, Bernadette? BERNADETTE: Well, we did turn the other cheek. Mr. Powell and Mr. Lane did not lift one finger to defend themselves. Neither did Mr. Sullivan. He just grabbed Mr. Jamieson's legs, and I don't see anything against that, grabbing his legs when you're being, you know, hit. KELLY: Before or after he was hit? BERNADETTE: After. KELLY: Okay. BERNADETTE: Actually, it was during. KELLY: All right. Let's talk to Clifton Powell here for just a second, we've got Paul Harvey here with "The Rest of the Story" straight ahead, so we're up against the clock here, but Clifton, you--how severely injured are you right now? CLIFTON: I had four blows to the head from the steel baton; three of the wounds required twelve stitches total. KELLY: Now, what--uh--in your mind, what caused this? I mean, there has to be something to escalate this to such an extent that somebody would take action like this--I find it hard to believe that somebody would just go and hit you. CLIFTON: The last five or six weeks we've had our property taken from the public right-of-way. We have symbolic speech on a public access that's attended to. It's crosses, signs, and posters. And Planned Parenthood, under the pretext of picking up trash and litter, have been trying to come out and confiscate and take possession of our property. KELLY: So, when Mr. Jamieson came out to try to take your property, did you "forcibly"--did you, like Mr. Sullivan, grab him in any way and "throw him to the ground", and all this, and start the fight? CLIFTON: No. Mr. Sullivan was standing his ground, and Mr. Jamieson tried to force his way through Mr. Sullivan to get to a sign or a piece of literature that was on the ground. And this man is paid fifty thousand dollars a year; Mr. Newell is paid ninety dollars an hour to come out and pick up trash? That's a pretext. You don't pay those kind of people that kind of money to come out and pick up trash. They were obviously doing the provoking. KELLY: All right, hang on just a second, we've got Paul Harvey with "The Rest of the Story"--uh, Bernadette, I know you have to go, but Clifton, why don't you hang around for another five minutes or so. Can you? CLIFTON: Sure. KELLY: I appreciate that. Bernadette, thank you very much for talking with us. BERNADETTE: Thank you very much for having us. I really appreciate it, and God bless you. KELLY: All right. It's 3:32 on 85 KOA's Kelly & Company. [BREAK] KELLY: Good afternoon, 85 KOA, Kelly & Company, Denver's most dependable weather forecast...[reads forecast]...We're talking with Clifton Powell, who was one of the protesters yesterday at the Planned Parenthood, who suffered some injuries, twelve stitches, and he took four blows--Were you charged with assault, Clifton? CLIFTON: No, I was not. I was not charged at all with any crime whatsoever. KELLY: Now, I'm just going off the Planned Parenthood release that FINALLY, after twenty-four hours, came out to the media, and says that all three protesters were charged with assault. CLIFTON: That's not correct, no. I was not charged. They had an opportunity to charge me yesterday with a crime, but they chose not to. They took statements from me at the police headquarters, but they did not charge me. KELLY: Why do you think that Planned Parenthood chose not to speak to the media, when we were pursuing them so vigorously to try to find some balance and to try to get both sides of this story? CLIFTON: Because they knew that two of their employees had done wrong, and they didn't know how to handle that and deal with the media. That's what I believe. KELLY: Now, how far will _you_ pursue this? Are you charging them with assault, and are--will you pursue this in court? CLIFTON: I signed a--what they call "offense report", and that's up to the city attorney to determine what charges are to be filed, if any. KELLY: What do you think you were doing wrong that would, uh, spur this Mr. Jamieson, or this Mr. Newell, Mr. Newell was the one who was hitting you, is that correct? CLIFTON: Yes--Mr. Newell. With a steel baton. KELLY: What--possibly could you have done, that you have not done over the last five years that--that has not been a problem, in doing what you decide to do--Abortion aside, what do you think you did to--to get Mr. Newell so upset as to hit you? CLIFTON: The history goes back a little ways, but particularly the last five or six weeks, the property, the symbolic speech on public access which is attended to. And then, yesterday, I wore a white lab coat that's covered with fake blood, and I was holding a doll that was covered with fake blood, and it could have been that, because that's the one other thing beside-- KELLY: Why do you use those--those props, if you will, um, because that's repulsive to me? Why would you decide to use that? CLIFTON: That's to show the people that are entering the abortion clinic what really goes on in there, because no one really sees what goes on in those places. And they're very secretive, they don't allow any regulation at abortion clinics, they don't allow any inspectors in their places, that's something that we're trying to show the public and anybody that's entering there, what really goes on, that abortion does kill children, and that's murder of the unborn child. KELLY: And you choose to use these--what some would term outrageous, using a baby casket, and so forth. CLIFTON: They're visual--we're not harming anybody, they're just visual, they're protected by the First Amendment, free speech. KELLY: I've got to cut you off there, because we've got a Bronco update coming up here...It's 3:44 on 85 KOA. [BREAK] KELLY: 85 KOA, Kelly & Company, we're talking with Clifton Powell, one of the protesters who was injured yesterday by a Planned Parenthood associate, Mr. Newell, and Gary Jamieson, I understand, has called us back; however, we are now trying to get _him_ back, I'd love to get Mr. Jamieson on the air, to talk about this--that would at least show a degree of courage, rather than a transparent little press release 24 hours after the fact. I think it's very cowardly, and I think it's clear that the Planned Parenthood people are on the defensive here. However, the way that this press release is written, and I underscore things like: "spurious charges are some of the tactics that harass providers", speaking of you and your organization, Mr. Powell--"another of their tactics is to flood the media with false charges; we're sorry that the media was so taken in by this incident..." What do you feel when you hear that? CLIFTON: Oh, I know it's not true, and it just makes me wonder what their next tactic is--I mean, what--they're always on the offensive and they're always trying to do their best to make us look as bad as possible. We're always trying to scramble around, trying to answer these spurious charges _they_ always bring against us... KELLY: Well, we can't deny that there have been a couple of acts of violence; how do you feel about the murdering of abortion doctors [sic]? CLIFTON: We deplore any violence of that type against abortionists. We're there to peacefully protest, and we pray, and we sing, and read our Bibles, and we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ--we do all those things that you find in the church, all the elements of the church down there. KELLY: Let's take a couple of calls... 537.56 | Operation Rescue Colorado | CUJO::SAMPSON | Mon Dec 18 1995 20:04 | 46
What is Operation Rescue Colorado? That question has been asked many times. On occasion, we are a very high profile organization. We are shown on the TV news, there are sound bites on the radio, our pictures are in the daily newspapers and we are even mentioned in churches. But with all that, our core purpose is rarely mentioned. Operation Rescue started in the late 1980's. The call then, as now, was one of repentance. And that call has always been to the church first. Many Christians would agree that abortion is murder but our actions betray our rhetoric. We might believe it but we don't live it. Operation Rescue Colorado is working to change that. We want to see all Christians active in the defense of the preborn and their mothers. Methods have always been secondary. We do not hold up one activity as all important any more than we see our ministry as all important. Operation Rescue is a facet of the whole pro-life movement. No more important than the other parts and no less essential either. So, what is essential? For one, our presence in front of abortion mills. It is there that we attempt to give women an opportunity to learn the truth about abortion. Many babies have been saved because their mothers heard the truth moments before the child was scheduled to die. That is essential! We invite you to join us; there is a place for everyone. We are also working in some unique areas. Two are up and running and a third awaits more funds. The goal with each is to make information on life issues only a phone call away. The Life Connection InfoFax and InfoLine both make outgoing calls and deliver information by fax or a recorded message. The Information Line also receives incoming calls to deliver a menu of recorded information. The third ministry is a computer bulletin board. With this, anyone with a computer and modem can access the text of thousands of pages of information on life issues. We can implement this third ministry as soon as the funds for another computer become available. We need your help! Our only source of support is the friends of this ministry. Remember, we are not asking for ourselves; we are all volunteers. We just want to make as big of an impact as possible as we battle the forces of death. Thank you for your involvement. Join us on the streets if you can, give what you can and please keep us in your prayers.
537.57 | Save a Life | CUJO::SAMPSON | Mon Dec 18 1995 20:06 | 35
Sometimes it's so easy to save a life! Wonderful news came to us a few weeks back. A life was saved and we were a part of it. We have been sidewalk counseling and picketing in front of Charles Gartner's abortion mill for two and a half years. Every once in a while, God lets us in on the wonderful things He is doing there. A woman was walking down the street and as she passed by Gartner's, one of the picketers offered her some literature. She was surprised to find out that abortions were committed there. Later, she showed the literature to her daughter and told her of her surprise in finding out about abortions being done at Gartner's. The daughter looked at the literature and made a decision: she could not get an abortion! Her mother didn't even know that she was pregnant but God did! He used her mother and the literature provided by the sidewalk counselors to spare the child's life. The daughter said that she had been driving by Gartner's for quite some time and hoped to see the picketers and tell them of what had happened. Her baby was about a year old when she stopped and talked to us. We are thankful for these little glimpses into to workings of God. We are confident that many other children have been spared a brutal death at the hands of an abortionist through the ministry of picketing and sidewalk counseling. So you see, sometimes it's so easy to save a life! All it takes is faithful service and a mighty God. Consider your part in this. It may be joining us as we stand for life outside an abortion mill or it may be helping to support the ministry of those who do. Either way, you can have a part in God's good works. |
