| Hello Stephen,
 Anyone out there know where I can get a (royalty free) ASCII text file
 of the NIV.
As this is still under copyright, I don't think that would be possible for
a large number of years yet... Not even legal to type it in, in bulk, sadly.
BUT .... if this should materialise, the sorts of basic utilities to start
with would be as in the 'Conc' program available for the KJV. Search on
string 'and's / 'or's (it handles one or the other, but not both). This is
a BIG advantage over a printed concordance.
It's useful to make the search on specified book / verse ranges, not only
for time of searching, but also to limit the volume of output to be
manageable.
 I was thinking of adding pictures and extra text (background) but I don't
 know whether I should or not ...
there's abundant info in the NIV study Bible which I find very useful and
interesting, as have others... There's always the basic cross reference
too...
Commercial programs link in Strongs reference numbers etc... (there *is*
an NIV concordance with Strongs numbers available - I think its about 35).
Pictures!!! Now that *does* sound interesting.
.... I can just see now - live video of Balaam's ass in action ;-)
- But would we see the angel initially (asses eye view) or not (Balaam's
eye view)? - user selectable option? - as with Elisha & Gehazi in 2 Kings
6:17. Of course, if you take the Arameans' eye view, it all goes blank a
couple of verses later... ;-}
Sorry. I was wandering somewhat!

| Thanks for the really USEFUL comments, there are going to help a great
deal ):}
By pictures i don't really know what I mean, but I was thinking
more from the history/geography angle ie. photos of the towns/cities
It was only an idea (even if it was a bad one!).
Is there nowhere I can get a text of the NIV which won't cost me and
has no royalties - anyone know of any CD-ROMS which might have this on?

| oops, should have read your reply more carefully - are there any other
versions which have no royalties associated with them?
|
526.4 | Also note 12.* ... | ICTHUS::YUILLE | Thou God seest me | Wed Jul 20 1994 10:46 | 27 |
| Hey, nothing wrong with the pictures idea - I just have to goof off
sometimes! Certainly views of the places concerned would be helpful - as
would maps, to hilight where things happened, journeys, etc. But I think
that would be a *lot* of work. The maps would have the advantage over
standard Bible maps in that they could be tailor-made for the verse context
too. And could maybe respond to input to hilight start / end of journeys /
places of interest - for instance any which matched a user-supplied start
string, for when you're searching for somewhere elusive...
The only Bible that is totally available is the KJV, because it has passed
any valid copyright period. I have a copy available from :
ICTHUS::DUA1:[YUILLE.CONC]BIBLE.KJV
It's 8897 blocks, and was typed in by a team of people in the USA some
years back. It's record structured, with one record per verse to simplify
the search algorithm.
There's a concordance program to access it (in the same directory), and a
front-end to the concordance program, written because no-one seems to know
where the concordance program source is now. So if you wanted to re-write
the concordance program incorporating the enhancements, it would be a start...
There's more information about on-line Bible utilities etc in note 12.
God bless

526.5 | Ambitious product plan | NWD002::RANDALL_DO | | Tue Aug 02 1994 13:05 | 30 |
| I've hoped someone would put together a program like this. Here's what
I would like:
- Windows (or Chicago or Mac)-based
- NIV text
- Thompson's cross-references integrated (click on the cross-reference,
and navigate through a topic)
- Integrated concordance
- Integrated multimedia Bible dictionary/encyclopedia (the pictures part)
- Integrated commentary
- Facility to design a reading/study program - lay out a weeks or
months program, set up so that the next day's session will come up when
I access the program next. If I miss a day, the program would adjust
forward, with a gentle chastisement for missing a day
- Place to record my thoughts, insights, etc. daily after
reading/studying, integrated into the daily facility
- Prayer record, also integrated into the daily facility
- Verse memory plan with prompting, drill, etc.
- Extensible to link across a network or bulletin board, to make it
easy to share with others.
Probably other requirements would surface when these were started.
Maybe access to issues of Christianity Today or books or Bible study
curricula....
My bias would be to produce a commercial program published through
NavPress. What a great way to use technology to put people into the
Word! Want to help product-ize this?

| Don,
You may want to talk with the folks who do LOGOS Bible Software. Much
of what you want is already implemented via Windows and/or on its way
in their (unforutnately WAY overpriced) CD (multimedia disk with
atlases & such).

| I think you've hit the nail on the head here!
"(Unfortunately WAY overpriced)"
There shouldn't be a price involved with sharing God's word!
I have been told that there is a 15pound charge to use the NIV
text and the the King James is free - my aim is to create a product
that can be copied and passed around for EVERYONE to use, without
worrying about copyright.
God Bless
