494.0. "The Secret of the SnarfMeister Revealed!" by CHTP00::CHTP04::LOVIK (Mark Lovik) Fri Jun 03 1994 14:55

On a lighter side, here's the promised information. I'm posting it in
a separate topic, so that no one can claim "I was out last week and
Chit-Chat got purged before I got to read it!". :-)

So, here's the method I've used to *legally* grab many-a-snarf. Note
that there are other methods (electronic submission, multiple-windows
open to notes, etc.) that not only are only crude and yield no true
endorphins, but also deprive the legal snarfers of such. Such low
methods should be distained by all!.

This method is based on character-cell notes. Windows-based note users
    are on their own.

    1) When getting close to the snarf time, get to 14.last (assuming it is
topic 14 where you will be snarfing, as it usually should be).

    2) Enter the following command (or an acceptable abbreviation of such):
          reply/last/noextract/notitle/noconfirm

    3) Enter the text that you want to be in your "snarfed" note,.

    4) Get to the command line of the editor (I am assuming you are using
the TPU-like interface), but type QUIT

Everything is now ready. From now on you just need to lurk beneath the
    water's surface, waiting to strike.

    5) Keep hitting KEYPAD 3 (next note) at intervals to see how entries
    are progress.

    6) When numbers get above 14.xxx95, increase the frequency of step 5. :-)
Don't stop to read any entries -- keep hitting that key!

    7) Have the "CTRL" key depressed and a finger ready above the "Z" key.

    8) As soon as note 14.xxx99 appears, hit "up arrow" to recall the
    previous command ("reply/last/noextract/notitle/noconfirm"), hit return
to enter the command, and hit CTRL/Z to exit the editor and post your
    note. Speed matters here. :-)

    9) Sit back and enjoy the results (hopefully). :-)

That's it. Standard notes features. No magic.

So, who will take over the title of SnarfMeister/SnarfMistress????

    So long,

    Markel -- SnarfMeister emeritus. :-)

I had a mischievous urge to create the topic and set the reply hidden!

FYI - I forwarded the basenote to myself, figuring that Markel will set
it hidden before he goes, and then I'll charge anyone a modest fee if
    they want the data ;-)

You sneak (and undisputed Snarf King)!

I had a similar method, which I was in the process of refining....
but it required the use of, ummm, shall we say external tools...
no that sounds like I cheated.

I used standard notes features and a bit of handy stuff from X
    windows...

    ANyone curious?

hah, you thought it would be here...
    :-)

how much do you think I could get for my method -
which worked when successfully executed (ie, no stopping to read the
    daisies.... :-)

    nop not here either...
    :-)

We might be interested, Phil, had you more success with your method! :-D

    Hey!

My method worked once I had the bugs worked out :-)

And it should be faster than ML's

but about half the time the endorphins were running too high and I
misstyped or hit 3 too many times or ....

    :-)

Yes, the difference between the boys and the men. And my snarfs were done
the old fashioned way. Steamroller!

(Actually, I got some squeakers the old fashioned way, too!)

acutally, I'm wondering if my mehtod might get to be considered
    cheating now...

Good idea SMcConnell - I forwarded .0 to myself too :-), of course I may
never have the opportunity to make use of it :-(. Time to get back to
my code now though.
