418.1 | Why I like it... | POWDML::MOSSEY | | Wed Feb 23 1994 15:37 | 22 |
| The system crashed and I lost my first note, so I'll try again:
I'm a big fan of Focus on the Family. I feel Dr. Dobson is a
tremendous leader in the arena of politics and the family. The
fact that his ministry has grown and continues to grow at a
rapid rate (and spin off other ministries such as Family Research
Council, headed by Gary Bauer) shows God's blessing on this much
needed work. I think this is one of the few ministries that has
not lost the "common touch" - meeting people's needs where they're
at - remembering their roots - Who put them where they are at
and Why.
I subscribe to Focus on the Family magazine, Citizen magazine, and
receive Dr. Dobson's monthly newsletter. All of these publications
are thought-provoking, insightful, encouraging, and are useful
tools for any family, whether you have children or not.
I would like to visit their new headquarters in Colorado Springs
if I ever make it to Colorado.

I'm a supporter of FOTF as well. I first became acquainted with them
several years ago when the film series "Focus on the Family" came out.
I've heard Gary Bauer speak several times and admire the work he does.
I received a tape from them that featured the dedication ceremonies
of their new headquarters which featured Dr. Dobson, Tony Evans (excellent
message) Gary Bauer (a short but very much to the point message) and
Chuck Colson.
I don't subscribe (yet) to all of their literature but I do get mailings
from them (got one just yesterday that I haven't had a chance to read).

| I also support Focus on the Family. Living approximately 2 miles from
the new headquarters and knowing quite a few employees of FOTF. Dr.
Dobson is a huge supporter of Boy Scouts of America as well as BSA (our
council anyway) supporting FOTFs efforts....
If I can only say one thing that disturbs me about the company. Again,
knowing quite a few employees of FOTF, I feel FOTF needs to "Focus on
the families" of their employees. There are a few cases I am aware of
that indicate FOTF does not quite "practice what they preach".
You see, in their effort to assist families in crisis, they tend to
work their employees to excess. Late nights, early mornings, etc.
My wife worked for them for about one week. She quit because she had
been propositioned while working, by a male employee. When she
confronted management, she was told those kinds of things didn't happen
at FOTF..
NOW, please don't get me wrong. It is a great company doing great
things. I do think they need to be sure NOT to forget the employee's
family and employee themselves in their quest....
In short, they just need to NOT lose the "focus on the family", their
family as well as everyone elses....

WOW!! I was shocked to read your note, Bob. I guess I felt the
same way re: "things like that don't happen here." A good reminder
not to put people and things on a pedestal - they are imperfect.
I am quite surprised that "they" (Personnel or whoever told your
wife that) had that attitude however. Don't they watch the news?
Every other day there's another case of a church member/priest,
etc., involved in sexual harrassment/abuse charges. It's WRONG
to deny these things happen in "Christian" circles, because they
do. The church (Body of Christ) needs to pull their heads out
of the sand.

I don't think he understands... I'll learn him... 8>)

| I listen to FOTF on the radio, it's on twice a day broadcast from a
local Christian radio station (one broadcast is in the afternoon and is
a repeat of the morning show). I really like the show, very
enlightening and very Biblical. Dr. Dobson has the benefit of insights
as a psychologist and a Bible scholar.
He also keeps abreast of events and bills of political importance, and
tries to keep his listeners informed.

| I also enjoy and listen to FOTF. I rejoice that such a ministry is
on so many stations, and is allowed in this country.
However; not to take away from FOTF I have had my eyes opened about a
few things since becoming a member of Promise Keepers. They are not
negative about FOTF or other organizations. But realize it, like it or
not the application of the scripture of this and most radio programs
are focused on Middle/Upper class families consiting of Mother/Father
and kids.
There is a whole bunch of people out there that do not fit this mode,
that really need to know the scripture and how to apply it in their
lives. The applications that are preached about families does not apply in
the inner city areas. one ex here we must spend much more time filling in
the gap of absent fathers, of being fathers and big brothers to
hundreds of kids, not just our. We must be sensitive to these needs
and learn the differences in the culture to be an effective witness in
this much needed area. Teaching on how to do this is not readily
available. Also teaching on reaching kids who have no parental
guidance and are involved in drug/rock culture is difficult to come by,
with Bob Larson probably being the only Christian Radio program dealing
with this area. Try telling an abused child they can trust their
Father in Heaven, it is not the way to start a witness to them.
Again I don't have anything against FOTF and other groups that are
tailored to the mid/upper income levels, but next time you decide to
find a minstry to support you might consider looking at some of the
other ones.
If you doubt the intended audience of Dobsons books, look at any of the
covers.

418.10 | What the world needs now.... | POWDML::MOSSEY | | Wed Mar 02 1994 15:30 | 20 |
| Hi Sparky-
Focus on the Family, as with any other organization, is going to be
led into a specific area of ministry - theirs happens to be the
family; as God designed it to be. I understand that many (the
majority?) families today don't fit the father/mother/2-kids-and-a-dog
mold. However, I think in the past 6 - 12 months, FOTF has recognized
this and started to address some of these issues (I specifically
remember issues surrouding single parenthood were mentioned.)
But as with any organization, they cannot be all things to all people.
If you are familiar with other organizations that help families, would
you please share information about them? I for one would be
interested. There are just so many hurting people out there, I
sometimes wonder how we can reach them all.
Thanks,
Karen

| Sparky,
Your concerns are valid, but maybe you do not recognize that FOTF is
helping that inner city child, but establishing the Biblical Basis for
the Family, so that child can know what he should strive for. The
present society is pushing for moral relativism, which recognizes
anything you want to recognize. That is the greatest diservice you can
do for that inner city child. We need to give him the Biblical Goal
for the family, which Jim Dobson is doing.
Also, recognize that each year FOTF sponsers summer camps with a sports
focus for families without fathers (for whatever reason). If you saw
the picture of last years campers, they were not middle/upper income
suburbanites. They are also very active in promoting Promise Keepers,
and Coach Bill is outspoken in his support of FOTF.
While I actively support FOTF I have been far more involved in
supporting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which doesn't say that
one is better or anything. Just that my interest is heavier in FCA.
You obviously are more impressed with Promise Keepers.
In His Love,
Daryl

| I didn't want to slight or offend anyone, I just wanted to point out
there is a need for both. I do feel though with most of the radio
outreach being about traditional families, we may be putting up a
barrier between the single parent/blended family and singles and
traditional families, as well as income level and race. No you can't
be all things to all people, I agree, and my problem isn't with a
single ministry, they all are great. Maybe it is Houston, but I can
get 3 fm and 4 am all religous stations, and all of them are geared
towards traditional family. I understand that they must survive off of
listener donations, and they have to tailor their programming to
maximize the giving, but I would in a perfect world desire a mix. Like
I said, I don't know of any radio minstry that does deal with problems
the inner city is facing, from their propective. I know there are some
fantastic preachers that are really blest with knowledge in this area,
but they either can't or don't wish to get the air time.
I think the FCA is a great organization that I was involved in during
high school, and probably has one of the better avenues to reach these
kids, I had forgotten about them, Thanks for mentioning them, Sports is
a big draw in this area.
I do see Promise Keepers as a way to reach this area, not through the
kids, but through the men. It was at a local PK seminar that I finally
realized that there is a whole different world out there that needs to
know about God's Love and forgivness, but they need to be reached in
non-traditional methods. Kind of like when you go to a marriage
seminar and realize that women are different than men, and have a whole
diffent set of needs.

| Sparky,
Maybe I went overboard in misinterpreting your concern, glad to see
we're in the same church if not the same pew.
May I urge you to be cautious, however. Because, we need to ensure
that we do not change the message to attract the target. When I go
talk to a FCA Huddle, I can't dilute the message or alter it, because
the kids don't have a father at home, and they don't have as much money
as I do. The Bible says the father is the head of the household. Now
I may get them to listen, because of the sports connection, but the
message is the message. The FOTF ideals are taken from the Bible and
that means they are unchangeable, but that's why they use the summer
sports camps for kids with no father present.
Here in LA, we do get a couple of programs on different Christian
stations that are Negroes from the inner city talking to Negroes in the
community, but as you state, it is economics for how long they can stay
on the air.

I have received numerous requests for Boston area stations, and
Nancy's for who-knows-where in Calif. Are you in San Fran Nancy?
You can find them on KCBC-AM 770 m-f 7:30AM, or
KFAX-AM 1100 m-f 1:00AM\
9:00AM \ same show repeated.
4:30PM /
9:00PM/
I also have listings for dozens of other towns all up and down
calif.
As for Boston: WEZE-AM 1260 m-f 1:30AM, 7:30AM, 12:30PM
8:30PM.
Worcester: WVNE-AM 760 m-f 8:00am, 12:30PM
There are also a Springfield and New Bedford station listed.
Massachusetts has one of the shortest lists of stations that
carry it.
Anyone want New Hampshire stations? I have 17 listings, some
of them are Derry, Concord, Manchester and Seabrook.
There is even one for Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico!
There are only two states that don't have a station that airs
Focus On The Family. (The listing has 48 states.) I didn't
bother to figure out which two aren't there. Washington DC
even has 5 stations that carry it! (I wonder if anyone there
listens...) I even have Canada and US Territories listings.
