402.0. "Is the Jewish Calendar off by 200 years?" by EVTSG8::DUSATKO () Tue Feb 15 1994 04:12
John mentioned that we now have by the jewish calendar the year 5754. I
really respect that although the theory of evolution has had such
influence in our society, that they still, every time they mention the
date, claim the truth of the Bible. But what I don't understand is why
the jewish people are off by at least 200 years. There are scriptural
references, without a hole, mentioning the exact amount of years until
Jesus. I conclude either the gregorian calendar is really off more than
we could realize or the jewish people somehow never added up the years
correctly.
Prophecy of the Messiah in Dan.7:26
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to
restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven
weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the
wall, even in troublous times.
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:
Mention is made in this prophecy of 7 weeks and 62 weeks. I assume the first 7
weeks (49 years) were from the command to the finishing of the temple.
The 62 weeks (434 years) were the time from finishing the temple until the
cutting off of the Messiah(Jesus' death).
Calculation:
450 BC (Command of Cyrus)
+ 49 Years (From command to Temple completed)
+ 434 Years (From Temple completion to the cutting off of the Messiah)
-----
33 AD (Crucifixion)
Mattering on which non-scriptual reference you use in history, the first year
of the reigh of Cyrus varies. Almost all of them, however, fall within 300 to
500 BC.
Babylonian Captivity
Jer.25:11,12, Jer.29:10, 2.Chron.36:21 and Dan.8:24 state that it would be 70
Years before the children of Israel would return to Jerusalem.
Jer.29:10 States:
For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I
will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return
to this place.
Calculation:
450 BC (Command of Cyrus)
+ 70 Years (Time in Babylon, Sabbath for Israel)
-----
520 BC (Captivity into Babylon)
The Kings of Judah
Up until the time of the captivity the years of reign of each king in Judah
were accurately recorded, agreeing in Chronicles as well as in Kings.
Calculation:
520 BC (Captivity into Babylon)
+ 11 Years - Zedekiah.(2.Ki.25:2,2.Ch.36:11)
+ 0 Years - Jehoiachin(3 months,2.Ch.36:9)
+ 0 Years - Jehoahaz(3 months,2.Ch.36:2)
+ 11 Years - Jehoiakim(2.Ch.36:5)
+ 31 Years - Josiah(2.Ch.34:1)
+ 2 Years - Amon(2.Ch.33:21)
+ 55 Years - Manasseh(2.Ch.33:1)
+ 29 Years - Hezekiah(2.Ch.29:1)
+ 16 Years - Ahaz(2.Ch.28:1)
+ 16 Years - Jotham(2.Ch.27:1)
+ 52 Years - Uzziah(2.Ch.26:3)
+ 29 Years - Amazja(2.Ch.25:1)
+ 40 Years - Joash(2.Ch.24:1)
+ 6 Years - Athalja(2.Ch.22:12)
+ 1 Year - Ahaziah(2.Ch.22:2)
+ 8 Years - Jehoram(2.Ch.21:5)
+ 25 Years - Jehoshaphat(1.Ki.22:42)
+ 41 Years - Asa(2.Ch.26:13)
+ 3 Years - Abijah(2.Ch.13:2)
+ 17 Years - Rehoboam(2.Ch.12:13)
+ 40 Years - Solomon(2.Ch.9:30)
-----
953 BC (Beginning of Reign of Solomon)
From leaving Egypt to Solomon
In 1. Knig 6:1 it is written:
And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children
of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's
reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began
to build the house of the LORD.
The 4th year of Solomon's reign was the year 949 BC. Israel left Egypt 480
years earlier.
Calculation:
953 BC (Beginning of Reign of Solomon)
- 4 Years (begins Temple)
-----
949
+ 480 Years (time between leaving Egypt and beginning Temple)
-----
1429 BC (Israelites leave Egypt)

| Time in Egypt
In Exodus 12:41 it is written:
And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the
selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the
land of Egypt.
Calculation:
1429 BC (Israelites leave Egypt)
+ 430 Years (Time in Egypt)
-----
1859 BC (Israelites enter Egypt)
The Birth of Jacob
Jacob was 130 Years old as he went to Egypt. Genesis 47:9 states as Jacob
arrives in Egypt:
And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an
hundred and thirty years:
Calculation:
1859 BC (Israelites enter Egypt)
+ 130 Years (Age of Jacob when entering Egypt)
-----
1989 BC (The birth of Jacob).
The Birth of Isaac
Isaac was the father of Jacob. He had his son Jacob when he was 60 years old,
as stated in
Genesis 25:26:
And Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.
Calculation:
1989 BC (Birth of Jacob)
+ 60 Years (Age of Isaac when he bore Jacob)
-----
2049 BC (The birth of Isaac).
The Birth of Abraham
Abraham was 100 years old, as he bore his son Isaac, as stated in Genesis
21:5:
And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
Calculation:
2049 BC (Birth of Isaac)
+ 100 Years (Age of Abraham when he bore Isaac)
----
2149 BC (The birth of Abraham).
From Abraham to Noah
In Gen. 11:10 to 11:26 appear the age of each father as they bore their child.
We can thereby determine the birthdate of Noah.
Calculation:
2149 BC (Birth of Abraham)
+ 70 Years (Age of Terah when he bore Abraham - Gen. 11:26)
+ 29 Years (Age of Nahor as he bore Terach - Gen.11:24)
+ 30 Years (Age of Serug as he bore Nahor - Gen.11:22)
+ 32 Years (Age of Reu as he bore Serug - Gen.11:20)
+ 30 Years (Age of Peleg as he bore Reu - Gen.11:18)
+ 34 Years (Age of Eber as he bore Peleg - Gen.11:17)
+ 30 Years (Age of Salah as he bore Eber - Gen.11:15)
+ 35 Years (Age of Arphaxad as he bore Salah - Gen 11:12)
+100 Years (Age of Shem as he bore Arphaxad - Gen 11:10)
+500 Years (Age of Noah as he bore Shem - Gen.5:32)
------
3039 BC (Birth of Noah)
Births from Noah to Adam
In Gen.5 appear the age of each father as they bore their child. We can
thereby determine the birthdate of Adam.
Calculation:
3039 BC (Birth of Noah)
+ 182 Years (Age of Lamech as he bore Noah - Gen.5:28)
+ 187 Years (Age of Methuselah as he bore Lamech - Gen.5:25)
+ 65 Years (Age of Enoch as he bore Methuselah - Gen.5:21)
+ 162 Years (Age of Jared as he bore Enoch - Gen.5:18)
+ 65 Years (Age of Mahalaleel as he bore Jared - Gen.5:15)
+ 70 Years (Age of Cainan as he bore Mahalaleel - Gen.5:12)
+ 90 Years (Age of Enos as he bore Cainan - Gen.5:9)
+ 105 Years (Age of Seth as he bore Enos - Gen.5:6)
+ 130 Years (Age of Adam as he bore Seth - Gen.5:3)
----
4095 BC (Creation of Adam)
+ 1994
-------
6089 is the approximate year we have today.
Why does this not agree at least somewhat closer with the jewish calendar?

402.2 | Two questions about .0 | EEMELI::ROUHU | Marana tha! | Sun Apr 03 1994 13:23 | 33 |
| I would like to understand two things presented in .0 and be grateful if
someone could answer these:
> (Dan 9:25) :-
>Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to
>restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven
>weeks [...]
>
>Mention is made in this prophecy of 7 weeks and 62 weeks. I assume the first 7
>weeks (49 years) were from the command to the finishing of the temple.
Why should the "unto the Messiah the Prince" mean "to the finishing of the
temple"? At first glance it would seem obvious to me that "unto the
Messish" means "unto the coming of the person of Messiah". (I know that
this would not fit to the calculations, but anyway...).
The second question is about Jer 25:12 which is referred to in .0. Jer
25:12 states that: -
"And it shall come to pass, when
seventy years are accomplished,
that I will punish the king of
Babylon, and that nation, saith the
LORD, for their iniquity, and the
land of the Chaldeans, and will make
it perpetual desolations. "
As far as I understand the land of the Chaldeans (Iraq) is not desolate -
though not very fruitful either - nowadays. How should we understand this?
