390.0. "World Wide Web vs Christians" by AUSSIE::CAMERON (and God sent him FORTH (Gen 3:23)) Tue Feb 01 1994 23:48

The World Wide Web is now happening at Digital. Imagine Videotext but with
graphics and sound as well as text. People who access the web can also
see things outside Digital. For further information, see the
    INTERNET_TOOLS conference.

    But what I'd like to ask is this;

Are there any ideas from members of this conference on how we can use
this emerging technology to help Christians in the workplace?

    	A concordance service?
List of churches in local areas?
    	Ethical issues list?

390.1Some stuff already existsKALI::EWANCOEric James EwancoWed Feb 02 1994 10:096
There are already a large number of sites that provide various kinds of
Christian stuff, especially Bibles. But there is more than can be done. Maybe
a list of interesting mailing lists, a menu of external sites that have inter-
esting things, sources, and so forth.

For those using the World Wide Web, the following entry is depressing
    if you do not believe in evolution;

    	http://nsl.pa.dec.com/test/FutureFantasy/darwin.html

    And I quote;

    	``Odds&Ends: The Darwin Fish

You've seen it on cars: a funny looking fish with legs, named "Darwin".

Now, you know where you can get it. Only $5.00.
To order a fish electronically, click here. ''

Included is a black and white picture of the product available.

Why would it be depressing?

Many that I have met are depressed by arguments for a particular
standpoint in a medium where no opposing arguments are present.

A GUIDE TO CHRISTIAN RESOURCES ON THE INTERNET

v 1.1 March 1, 1994

One of the facts that John and I have discovered in working on NJB is
that much more has been accomplished by bumping our heads together
than had we tried to accomplish the project independently. We know
there is much room for improvement, and that with the help of folks
with an eye toward cooperative effort, and a vision for "what can be
accomplished", our hope is that Not Just Bibles... will be an accur-
ate and comprehensive resource for everyone.

available in the appropriate ICLnet directory, /pub/resources/text/
history/Augustine/...

masters) for Christian universities and organizations that have an
Internet connection. Our purpose is to facilitate contact between these

We are pleased to announce the opening of the NJB Reading Room, the
seed for a centralized library project augmenting ICLnet's growing FTP
archive of programs and documents. Our focus is conservative and evan-
gelical. The NJB Reading Room, is our project name for the "/pub/re-
sources" directories at ICLnet's FTP archive. It now includes exten-
sive holdings of the Christian Research Institute, including CRITEXT,
Johannine Hours and other Taize Community documents, Focus on the Fam-
ily monthly Newsletter, and The Executable Outline Series, and some
of the documents on early Church history mentioned above. We wish to
thank Rich Poll, Brother Roy, Mark Conty, Mark Copeland, and Martin
Bush for their generosity and industry in making the Reading Room a
possibility. We intend to locate additional files in the archive as
time progresses. May we invite you to browse. We hope that you also
will recommend new resources with an objective of serving the need.

    Pro-Life Web Site Being Developed

LifeAction Advocates, a pro-life organization in Florida, is making
arrangements to sponsor a full-time web site for pro-life material.
Arrangements have been made to cover the internet connection fees,
however donations for the hardware platform for the site are still
being sought. While some money and items have already be raised, the
    items being sought include:

486-66 MHz Intel board (est. $200-$250)
	   16 Mbyte RAM (est. $640)
1 Gbyte IDE Drive (est. $400)

Currently, there are no plans to charge for pro-life material going on
the site. Some of the material to be supported would include that in
the archives of the Pro-Life News (http://www.pitt.edu/~stfst/
    pln/AboutPLN.html).

For more information, or to make donations, please contact Dr. Gordon
Gibby at [email protected] or write or call LifeAction
Advocates, Inc. at 3232 SW 35th Blvd, Suite 324, Gainesville, FL 32608.
    Voice-mail phone (904) 378-2211, selection #6. LifeAction Advocates is
    a 501(c)(4) IRS-registered non-profit group incorporated in the state
of Florida. Donations are not tax-deductible.

This is not direct solicitation. It is informative rather than appealing ;-)

It is not my text, I did not write it, and I do not have the right to
modify it. The moderators will have to delete it _if_ they see it as a
solicitation of funds under the Digital policies.

And I do not think it is right for the moderators to delete this string
of replies to my notes. This removes valuable discussion history.

    Aww c'mon!

	I *can;t* believe this!

Glen, can you *honestly* tell me you would have objected to this if
certain "other" subjects were being 'solicited' for?

This is _not_ solicitation, per s. At no stage did it state "give
us money" in the sense of 'do it' - but rather, "if" you feel you
are able to assist, then please contact...

There is nothing wrong with making needs known.

Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

The change I suggested in .9 does not modify the meaning in any signficant
way, but does make it comply with policy. When I make this sort of change
I sometimes add "[edited to comply with Digital policy on announcements]"

| Glen, can you *honestly* tell me you would have objected to this if
| certain "other" subjects were being 'solicited' for?

Bob, I have set many a note hidden for solicitation in the "other"
notesfile. Solicitation is not allowed according to Digital, so they all get
deleted. True, we get a lot of flack for doing it, as some of the things are
for very good causes, but if it asks for money, it's gone.

| This is _not_ solicitation, per s. At no stage did it state "give us money"
| in the sense of 'do it' - but rather, "if" you feel you are able to assist,

Doesn't matter. Both are asking for money. Whether it's worded if you
feel you can or not, it's solicitation of those who can. It should be deleted.

| There is nothing wrong with making needs known.

When it involves money, there is something wrong with it.

| steamed,

    Glen,

in answer to your note (seriously) - I have *been* a Moderator - of
this very conference! I *know* what the P&P's say.

My call would be that, while it flys 'close' it is not 'over' the line.

But, and this is a important, I am *not* currently a Moderator (and
have no desire to be one - thanks), and it is _their_ call. I hope they
    don't delete the note.

Another option is that *they* edit and re-post - but again, it is a
Moderator call. Not your's, not mine - theirs.

God Bless you my friend, God is closer to you than you think,

While the wording of .7 may not fit precisely into the prescribed pattern,
the opinion of the moderators is that it is not solicitation. It conforms
to the spirit of information, rather than the spirit of solicitation.

James, I offered to delete the intervening once the point was agreed
because they are of topic, and would generally be a distraction, rather
than of any future interest to those seeking information about WWW. If
your preference (.13) is for them to remain, that's ok too...

If anyone wishes to pursue this further, please use mail.

No Jim, I have not done that. And no, I am not targeting any
conference. When it comes to solicitation, regardless of what conference
it is in, I say something about it. In the "other" conference, I set it
hidden and have the author edit the reply, or I end up deleting it altogether.
