355.0. "Shorter Catechism for you to learn" by GERBIL::MAGEE () Tue Dec 21 1993 08:58

This is a note to help you and your families memorize
the Shorter Catechism. Each reply will have one question
and one answer out of view till you press return.

If you would like to talk about a particular issue in a
catechism, please use the next note, so that this note can
be easily paged through as new catechisms are added.

The Shorter Catechism was written by the Assembly of
Divines that met in Westminster which met from 1643-1647.
As a subordinate standard, it is a systematic presentation
of orthodox biblical teaching which has been used by
	thousands of Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists
and others for over 300 years. This kind of systematic
theology can be a very helpful as a roadmap to biblical
truths. But unlike the Bible, the confessions and
catechisms of the church can be changed to make them more
closely correspond to the Bible, as these were when they
were originally adopted by the church in America in 1789.

They are a helpful compliment to Scripture memorization,
and protect us from harmful distortions of biblical
teaching. By the way, I also have some handouts on these
for children that I have used in Sunday School.

	Peace, Steve
