322.0. "Thanksgiving 1993" by TOKNOW::METCALFE (Eschew Obfuscatory Monikers) Mon Nov 22 1993 09:43

Yesterday, the Pastor told us of some statisticians who took a survey of
what children, grades 6 and under, were thankful for. They first went
into the churches, and they got a list of some things like, their
bicycle, Nintendo, mom and dad, families, pets, Michael Jackson doll
(a dated survey, I would suppose), and Jesus. (The children thought
that since they were in church, perhaps the surveyers were "fishing"
for a certain answer, so they tacked Jesus onto the end of the thankful
list.)

The same researchers went into the surrounding public schools, grades 6 and
under and asked the same questions. The thankful list was their
bicycle, Nintendo, mom and dad, families, pets, and Michael Jackson doll.
Not being in a church setting, Jesus was omitted from the list.

The Pastor then asked us if we were stopped in the parking lot outside,
what would we say we were thankful for? And if we were stopped in the mall,
would we give the same list? Would we have different priorities?

I know that I'm going to have my wife's family for Thanksgiving and
some of them are unsaved people. For what am I thankful during this
holiday? And to Whom am I thankful?

When you think of Thanksgiving and people express their gratitude, who
are they thanking? My unsaved relatives are thankful to good luck for
their fortunes and the "good things" of life.

Oh, we should be thankful we live in a society of plenty, for the families
we have, and the things. But I hope that in my life, my gratitude won't
be directed to empty space, attributed to good luck or self-acheivement.
That the Person Who has provided the plenty I have, the family I have, and
the things I have; that He is my focus of gratitude; and that I'm thankful
for the following:

Psalm 103:10

He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to
our iniquities.

Psalm 103:17-18
 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them
that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;
 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his
commandments to do them.

The next note contains the whole of Psalm 103, but I wanted to highlight
some of the things I am grateful for. Who can stand if God dealt with
us after our sins and was not merciful? But God is merciful and loves me.
For that, I give thanks.

Psalms 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his
holy name.
  2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
  3  Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
  4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with
lovingkindness and tender mercies;
  5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed
like the eagle's.
  6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are
oppressed.
  7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
  8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in
mercy.
  9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to
our iniquities.
 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward
them that fear him.
 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our
transgressions from us.
 13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that
fear him.
 14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
 15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he
flourisheth.
 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof
shall know it no more.
 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them
that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;
 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his
commandments to do them.
 19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth
over all.
 20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his
commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.
 21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his
pleasure.
 22 Bless the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the
LORD, O my soul.
322.2I'm thankful for...RICKS::PSHERWOODMon Nov 22 1993 10:2214
    Amen Mark!

    My pastor preached on Thanksgiving this week too.

    It struck me that although I have been greatly blessed with friends,
    family, and other things in this material world (a good job, etc), they
    all pale in comparison to the blessing/gift of salvation.

    Made me wonder if I thank Him enough for that...

    (if it were possible...)

    I plan to place a copy of this poem at each seat of our Thanksgiving
    table, so that the non-follwers of Christ in my extended family will
    know what my family is thankful for.

    If anyone likes this little poem, feel free to use it during the
    holiday.

An excellent suggestion Karen.  Thanks.
322.6CSLALL::HENDERSONFriend will you be ready?Mon Nov 22 1993 12:2036

 I'll be spending Thanksgiving this year with my ex wife and some friends
of hers and all the kids (the friend has 2 and our 3). I'm praying that somehow
the Lord will use me to steer Kathie and my kids back to the Lord, and perhaps
the opportunity to talk to her friends.

This weekend I became more aware of the need for my kids (at least the 2
younger ones) to recognize they have a great deal to be thankful for. This
was demonstrated by my youngest, who is 11, whom I didn't see all last week,
saying "Hi Dad..can I have my allowance for last week?", which demonstrated
a) Dad is a money tree, b) the lesson I tried to show him last week about
wise use of one's money bounced right off his noggin.

Well, at any rate..this is my first Thanksgiving since my relationship to
the Lord was restored, and I indeed have much to be thankful for. I am in
a church with the most loving, caring folks, and a pastor who in my opinion
is the epitome of what a pastor should be. I love the man dearly, and told
him so last night.

And I am thankful, that I am loved by my savior, who shed His blood and gave
His life that I might spend eternity with Him, though I am the absolute
last person on earth who should be given such a gift.

"Thank you Lord, for giving to me
 thy great salvation so rich and free"

    Thanksgiving will be spent with my ex as well. My boys birthdays are
    tomorrow and the next day [23 and 24 of Nov], so I'll be seeing him a
    lot this week.

    Pray that my witness will be strong enough to mean something to him. I
    care and want him to *know* Christ as Savior in his heart and soul.

    I am thankful for so very much. God is good to me inspite of my
    rebellion... [William if you're reading], as I was away from Him for
    nearly 8 years. You see I've obviously had reap much of what was sown
    in those 8 years, but with God at my side, I remain calm through the
    storm. Thank you Heavenly Father for having mercy on me as a sinner.

322.9CNTROL::JENNISONJohn 3:16 - Your life depends on it!Tue Nov 23 1993 12:4721
	Be anxious for nothing, but in all things, through prayer and
	supplication, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.

	Phillipians 4:6

	I love Thanksgiving, but I also strive to be continually thankful
	to the Father. Many times in my prayers, I will thank the Lord
	according to His promises, rather than asking. (ie. I thank you
	Lord that you have given your angels charge over me) I know he's
	done it, because His word says so. In this way, I am more mindful
	of the things He has already done, or has said he would do.

	Let your thanks be known continually, not just at Thanksgiving, or
	at meal times.

	I pray that as we all go forth to Thanksgiving feasts with family
	and friends, that we will be lights shining forth the Glory of
	the Lord.

	To God be the Glory, Great things He has done!
