277.0. "special request" by PSDVAX::SARTORI () Tue Sep 28 1993 11:47

I'd like to post a note to ask for prayers for a friend of mine.
After his sister told me this morning that she's asking everyone
she sees to please pray for him, I told her I'd post this note.

His name is Danny and he's been in intensive care for a week with a
failed liver. He's in an alcoholic coma, has suffered a cardiac
arrest (they worked on him for 25 minutes trying to revive him) and
he's bleeding internally. They are afraid he may have brain damage
but they won't be able to tell how accurate the brain scan is due
to toxins in the brain. The doctors are only giving him a 1% chance
of survival. Even though they do not expect him to live, his
family is holding onto that 1% with everything they've got.

He is only 40 years old and his family is very dear to me. Please
include him in your prayers. He's a wonderful person. He really
would "give you the shirt off his back", as they say, and he has a
great sense of humor. That's Danny ... always having a funny story
to tell and constantly making you laugh. If you or I told the same
story it wouldn't be funny, but if Danny told it, complete with his
imitations and facial expressions - you'd be rolling on the ground
    laughing.

    thank you!!
    Mary
     End of note

    Mary:

I too will keep Danny and his family in prayer. I had a close friend
die last March. She too is somebody I very much look forward to seeing
in Heaven. That is the one great consolation of death. It is really
the beginning of life for those who believe.

    God Bless,

Mary,

    Any update on Danny?

277.5update on DanPSDVAX::SARTORIThu Sep 30 1993 12:1144
Thanks for asking, Andrew. There is an update. He's out of the coma,
but his liver still is not functioning. They know he has some brain
damage but there's no way of telling to what degree. When we asked him
to blink his eyes if he could hear us, he did, so he's not completely
brain-dead but he is showing other signs of brain damage.

One of the doctors said yesterday that he is amazed is he still with
us. He never expected him to live through the day and it's been 8 days
since he was brought into the hospital. He said that it will take
another 3 weeks before they'll be able to tell if the liver has begun
to rejuvenate. They test his levels every 4 hours, but as far as telling
if it really is going to come back, it would take weeks.

They still do not offer any hope. When asked to give the chance of
survival, it is still 1% but there's always a miracle. His lungs have
improved and his blood pressure is rising (it was much too low). He's on
dopamien (sp?) to increase his blood pressure and for the first time,
they're able to begin to wean him off that medication. Before, his
pressure would drop right down when they lowered the dosage, so he *IS*
    improving.

The question is, how long can the other organs last without the liver.
You just can't survive without a liver. But that's what we're all
praying for ... for his liver to begin to work again. He really does
deserve another chance. Maybe if he survives this, he'll be able to
help other people before it's too late for them.

Dan's never hurt anyone in his life. When I think of how much he must
have been suffering it just breaks my heart. To imagine him carrying
around the pain, the guilt, the shame of his illness ... it must have
been horrendous. To feel that bad, both physically and mentally and
still not let anyone help you, it must have been horrible because he
really is a good guy. I guess it just got to the point where he just
couldn't stop drinking and he couldn't help himself.

It's a sad story because we're losing someone who is a warm hearted,
caring person. ALL prayers are appreciated. I've printed out the
responses I've received (in other notes, as well) and given them to his
sister, Susan. She thinks it's wonderful that people who don't even know
him are praying for him. I do too.

thanks and keep those prayers coming! He needs them!!!

My LORD, I pray for Dan, that You would continue to minister to his body,
and in so doing, reveal Your great love to his heart. Grant him a new
lease of life, Father, as You did to Hezekiah, that he might be a witness
to the great things You have done for him. Free him from the bondage he
has been under to the drink, and make the new life You give him overflow
with the richness of your love to all he meets.

I will agree with you, Andrew, for this miracle
in the Name of Jesus, and consider it done.

THANKS VERY MUCH for the support!

I printed out your replies for Dan's sister Susan. She read them last
night and was very moved. She said that it's the support from loved
ones and even people she doesn't know, that is helping her cope.

Andrew, your prayer brought tears to her eyes.. she thought it was
beautiful and has it on the wall in Danny's room.

Thanks again. Danny's condition has not changed from my last update.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Danny passed away on Sunday and
    was burried yesterday.

    He's at peace now.
